It should stop periodically (maybe 30-45 mins) and do a "defrost" cycle, it essentially runs backwards for a few minutes, just to melt that stuff off.
It could be that it was just before this cycle, but if it persists it'll eventually overheat and stop pumping. make sure your thermostat is allowing teh unit to stop periodically and chill out

Basically it indicates it's getting overworked, may be b/c of low freon.

X2 That

Mine just went out and I had to replace it.

turn it off turn on the ac and melt it. You might have lost your defrost board. some suppliers will sell to the public nowdays. I rebuilt my unit at the begining of the summer and got my board for 50 doller or so new

x2 on this, same happened to mine... I got a board from a local company in Winston.
As mentioned, run the A/C for about 10 minutes, that should break up the ice.

Of ocurse you could help it ou ta little and poor some hot water on it or pick off the ice a bit.
The defrost cycle is literally the unit running in a/C mode but just not running the blower so it's not forcing cold air into your house.

Turn off the heat (or AC) and just turn on the fan for about 15-30 mins. This will melt the ice. I would have someone come take a loof at it as soon as you can.

if its frozen out side just turning on the fan wont help .. that just turns on the indoor fan ... best thing is to turn it to a/c for awhile and let it melt off ... or you could just flip the thermostat to emergency heat till someone can come look at it ... i work on them for a living but your a little to far away to help you out

I misread, I thought he said inside.

there is a timer for the defrost cycle and some have a reset on the board or even a fuse. I'd check that before bringing out someone that'll charge $100 to do the same.

most of the jumper pins on common defrost boards are nothing but speed up functions for testing.. dont mess with any of the low voltage controls unless you have some common electrical training.. and a wiring diagram.. if u dont have either then you will do more damage than good.... at least fry a fuse.or a transformer... at most burn up all the defrost controls on the unit....having done hvac for 15 years.ive seen all sorts of owner trying to repair it rather than call a service man.. and almost none of them were happy to hear what i had to tell them, due to the damage that they caused.beyond a simple simple repair.... there's a whole laundry list of things that could be wrong ..
from defrost timer goin bad.
defrost thermostat bad. or loose.
low system charge...
bad reversing valve solenoid. or bad coil.
insect carcass shorting out board.. yes it does happen...
bad defrost fan relay..
etc...

based on make and model there may be more items to add to that list...if u are close to asheville i can look at it for ya
