Over a year ago I bought some synthetic winch rope courtesy of a deal posted by @jeepinmatt - thanks Matt! Just getting around to pulling off the old cable and putting on the rope and I remember a post about a heat shield for the first wrap or two on the drum...maybe posted by @shawn ? Anyway, a google search for "synthetic rope heat shield" and "winch rope heat shield" yields tons of results for synthetic rope with a heat shield already on the rope. Thanks but no thanks. Already have the rope, just need the shield. I also found tons of results for chafe guards. Thanks but the rope I have already has a chafe guard.

So is a heat shield necessary? And if so, where the heck can I get one? Thanks in advance.

If your winch has an internal drum brake then yes, if exterior to the drum then no.

Clean the drum off well, scuff it, then wrap it in duct tape before spooling the rope on. Will help preventing the rope from slipping on the drum.

Thanks for the info! I assume the duct tape doesn't do double duty as a heat shield? I guess that depends on how much tape you put on the drum.

The rope should have come with a heat shield. It goes on the bottom wrap.

You might could do the same thing by wrapping the drum with an old nylon ratchet strap. Or not.

The rope didn't come with a heat shield. They paperwork that came with it says it came with a chafe guard.

Get 10' of tubular nylon and slide it over your rope. Very cheap. The nylon will hold up fine but if you're worried about heat then get tubular polyester.
