Need some ideas...our 10th anniversary is coming up this fall, and we haven't hit the right idea for a trip.

We usually like places where we can do a lot of walking...to sight-see, dinner, etc. If we don't have to touch a car for a few days, it's great. Not big on the bar thing.

We've liked places like Charleston, Gettysburg, Ocracoke, Gatlinburg (the old days, before they got so commercial), and some random small towns we've stayed in.

Don't want to fly. Want to keep drive under 12-14 hours or so. Cruise is probably out. Don't necessary have to stay at the same place for a whole week. (Last long trip, we stayed in a different rental, B&B, motel every night).

Might, or might not, take the dog. No kids.

So...ideas?

Savannah and Chicago are both great for walking and sight-seeing... great restaurants in both. Depending on the time of year, one might be better than the other. Chicago is at about the limit of your ideal drive, Savannah is about 4.5-5 hours.

There's always DC, lots of walking and sights to see... after living there for a year (years ago), I can say it is a great place to visit.

Key West is a longer drive, but also a great place for walking and the fall (early to mid October is when we went) is perfect timing... weather is nice and it is 'off' season = cheaper. We stopped a couple of nights on the way down and back.

If I would ever suggest Chicago to my wife for an anniversary, it would probably be our last anniversary. She absolutely HATES everything north of the Mason Dixon line, mostly because I drag her there to see my family just about every year. She loves my family, just hates the geography (and more importantly the weather!)

I'm going to suggest a trip to Charleston or Savannah at some point, probably not an anniversary though. She wants somewhere tropical for the ann.

I lived in Charleston for a few years in college. I absolutely love that town. I have always been a country boy and hated cities, but Charleston felt like home. LOTS of history and parks. This would be my #1 romantic destination.

Fort Lauderdale, FL is about 12 hour drive and Tampa Fl is about 10 hour drive so you could do a cruise with Royal Caribbean and still be inside your 12-14 hour drive.

I doubt DP would spend a dime in a state like Illinois... I know I won't. :shaking:

DP, you posted a better map than I did... good job! :)

I was aiming at Illinois as a total denial state, and overlooked the others in red which are almost as bad.

Note on that map - although it "says" MD is "may issue", the real truth is it is virtually impossible to get a permit. Functionally "total denial".

^True. "May issue" to former LEO (almost exclusively) and may revoke at any given time, I think is how it works...

Many years ago, when Darlene and I rode motorcycle, we regularly camped at Cooper's Rock (just east of Morgantown WV). It was really nice there and we wouldn't mind going back, but until Maryland recognizes our 2nd amendment rights it won't happen again. There are simply too many other "friendly" states to pick from.

More than you know Don, more than you know......

I grew up there and have no desire to return, if my folks didn't still live there I wouldn't
