Not me!! My 63 year old Dad is doing the Tour de Cure again thsi year!!

He did this for the first time last year and I was extrememly proud of him. The routes turned out to be much longer than advertised and the temperatures were very high. Guesstimates at the finish line said 50% of the riders dropped out the first day and another 50% dropped out the second day. My dad was one of the last riders in, but he completed the ride. He did around 160 miles in 2 days.

I know times are tough and money is tight, but any contribution you can make is greatly appreciated.

Here's the email he sent out:

I rode The Tour de Cure for the first time last June. It was a tremendous experience. The Red Riders (riders with diabetes get a special red jersey) were inspiring, seeing them complete two 80+ mile rides over the two days was phenomenal. It also was a testiment to how far the research on diabetes has taken us. There was a time when it would have been almost impossible for The Red Riders to complete this ride. Research has developed better insulins, better delivery systems and increased our knowledge of this disease.
Thank you to all those to helped me raise over $5,000 last year. A special thank to my son for his fund raising efforts, his inspiration to me to complete this ride and his support and love.
My first encounter to diabetes came over well thirty years ago, when my son was 8 years old. My son was always thirsty, in and out all day long getting something to drink. He wet the bed every single night, think how that effects an eight year old's self esteem. We wouldn't let him drink anything after dinner to try to prevent the bedwetting. The doctor tested his urine for glucose and ketones, he was off the charts on both. Boy did we feel bad about our draconian method to prevent the bedwetting.
We spent a week in the hospital getting his blood sugar under control and learning how diabetes was going to change our lives. I learned how to test his urine for glucose and how to give him his insulin. We met a wonderful nurse by the name of Jean Kennedy who taught us how to manage the diabetes. All of the training material was published by, you guessed it, the American Diabetes Association, more specific the American Juvenile Diabetes Association.
Please help me raise both awareness and funds for the ADA so their assistance and training can benefit other kids and their families, even $5.00 can help educate. Your gift, no matter the size, will help.
I will be cycling in the American Diabetes Association's Tour de Cure fundraising event. Please support me with a donation by selecting the "Sponsor Me" button. Our efforts will help set the pace in the fight against diabetes. So let's get in gear and ride to Stop Diabetes!
Help Make a Difference in the fight against diabetes!
Each mile I ride, and the funds I raise will be used in the fight to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.
No matter how small or large, your generous gift will help improve the lives of nearly 24 million Americans who suffer from diabetes, in the hope that future generations can live in a world without this disease. Together, we can all make a difference!
Thank you for making a generous contribution to this cause that is so important to me!
If you be so kind as to forward this to those folks you have in your address books it would be appreciated. You may have friends who would like to join in the fight.
Thank You
Michael Hughes

That's great, good for your dad!

P.s. All the links seem to be working for me.

Thanks to those who have contributed. He still has some money to raise to meet his goal. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
