HELP! Fuel System Problems...

I just hit what appears to be a major snag on my YJ build. The YJ fuel tank had about 1-2 gallons of old (rotten) gas in it, and it appears to have at some time or other been sugared. I don't care about the pump as I am replacing it with an external one, but I still need a sending unit (gas gauge). The one that came out of it is beyond hope. 4WD Hardware lists a new sending unit at $231 and Autozone doesn't even list one. That price is positively ridiculous and I absolutely won't pay it. So-o-o-o...

What are my options, other than cutting the fender on the opposite side and installing my old CJ tank?
