Looking for someone to remove glued down engineered hardwood floors(Cheap shit) and install thick Pergo laminate flooring in Cameron NC. We have a 80lb Golden Retriever that has destroyed our engineered hardwood flooring. I would estimate that we have about 600SF of flooring. Anyone have any suggestions?

Why not just refinish the floors you have? I have done many engineered floors, just have to be gentle.

It's just like finishing a solid hardwood floor. As long as the floors are flat it can usually be done. All of the deeper scratches may not come out but it would still look a million times better and cost a fraction of the time and money of removing the old and then installing new. Just a guess, I'd say you are looking at around $1200 to refinish compared to 3x that or more to remove and replace. Also depending on how well the floors were installed the old can b a real pain to remove.

I'm in noposition to argue w/ the flooring guys (GotWood and Dylan), however... I do like to argue anyway...

If the dog has already quickly destroyed the floor, wouldn't that just happen again w/ the newly refinished floor?

I bet the new floor gets destroyed eventually too. Dogs that size will do that. I have a boxer mix in the house so I know what he is capable of.

Thats why Im interested in Laminate. Our last house had laminate and it didnt show the scratch marks. We keep his nails trimmed and hes not an overly hyper dog. From what Ive seen/read laminate is more durable than wood except for bamboo. Am I wrong?

If you do get laminate - I suggest getting something really thick, like 12mm or so. It will cost a little more - but it dosn't have that aweful timmy "hollow" clicky sound. Its more expensive, but it will keep the sound of the dog's snails on the floor from driving you crazy. A good underlayment helps w/ that too.

We are going with either AC4 or AC5 12-15mm thick with a good pad. I just cant stand looking at a 3 yr old house with shitty floors. Must be my OCD!

Got a quote for $500 for removal of the glued down shit and $600 for install of the new. Does this sound appropriate? We are purchasing the flooring ourselves.

Before I google..where is Cameron NC?

Don't be surprised if it cost as much or close, to rip out the old and prep,as it cost to install the new. Cheap glue down will rarely come up in one pc. It'll be more like pulling up splinters. You'll likely leave behind more than what gets pulled up and need to scrape it. You'd be lucky if the pcs. you pull up also pulls up a little sub floor with it. Better to fill in or cover over a few low spots than to have to sand/scrape and cuss the high spots left behind.

Did they speak engrish? Sounds like a better price per ft. than I offer on the install, but the tear up sounds about right.

Did they come and look at it, or just a general over the phone price? If they priced it over the phone, I hope they left themselves a little wiggle room for additional charges for ''unforeseen'' circumstances, regarding the tear out. I would have.

So $1 sqft for install?
Sounds pretty darn cheap.
But... installing laminate isn't rocket surgery. But as Dylan said if the floor isn't level after tearing out the old stuff it becomes a headache.

The sub floor is concrete slab so I'm hoping it will be level. I talked to the guy who did the original install and he said he didn't have any issues. The guy who is going to do the tear up/install said he uses a skill saw to cut slats in the existing floor and use a sawsall to get it up. Kinda like this.

Yup thats exactly how I've pulled up some old floors, set depth on saw to just enough for the floor, cut into manageable pieces and have at it w/ a crowbar.
That works for walls too if you only need to take out a section.

I use a scraping machine that weighs about 300#. Makes a hell of a racket but is quicker. Rent one from Ellis Flooring in Charlotte.

That does sound a little cheap. I just hope they don't break it off in you to remove/reinstall your moulding. Gotta look for those hidden charges.
In the past I've been under cut a lot on flooring jobs come to find out a lot of flooring guys don't mention moulding until it is time to reinstall it. I never hid that cost.
