Having problems with carb on wife's Jeep. It's 1985 with a stock 258. Sits a while and won't crank, will crank if I spray starting fluid in it.Once it starts it runs like crap, floods very easily. It has been rebuilt 3 times by 3 diffrent people. Still does the same thing. Tired of throwing money into this set up. Has anyone ran a Ford 2 bl card on this set up? If so can ya'll give me some pointers on it. What kind of linkage, adapters, or intake will I have to use for the Ford carb set up? Thanks

"Back in the Days" it was a common carb swap w/good results... I recently did the swap again on my '84 . This time, however, I purchased a Holley 2300 and am very pleased w/it's performance. Had to purchase an adaptor plate thru Summitt, and modify the throttle linkage plate - otherwise, piece of cake.

Go to Ebay and search sellers for this guy ehrmannmp

I got the Motorcraft 2100 and it made my Jeep run better than ever. Top speed went up to 85 again for the first time in about 20 years. Most importantly, it fires up faster and easier than ever.

similar/same listing below to what I got...

I also bought his short ram air intake which he currently has listed as well.

Can't seem to find the old email, but I also bought a HEI/DUI/?? ignition upgrade at the same time. Seems Michael (ebay guy) sold me that as well so send him a message perhaps. The combo of the ignition upgrade, 2100 carb, and air intake was the best money I ever spent on my 81 CJ. Some general info below...

My brother did the MC2100 upgrade to his CJ and it was one of the best upgrades he has done to his jeep. He can drive up Show off rock at URE and his jeep does not flood out. I've seen jeeps with Webber up grade and they don't run nearly as well as his does with the 2100.

As others posters have said search EBay they usually sell on there fully rebuilt for about $200. Another good upgrade is the HIE ignition upgrade again you can order that on EBay brand new for about $60-$70. Between the carb and the ignition upgrade you will not believe how well your jeep CJ can run.

Yep, $420 was the total for my Ebay purchase. That included the full 2100 carb kit, ignition upgrade (HEI/DUI/??), and ram air intake. The difference is day and night. Can't believe I tolerated the original set up for the last 23 years.

Please excuse my hijacking of this thread but this thread from jeep forum is just having you upgrade you cap and rotor. It does nothing to address a worn out distributor. I debated this about a year with the OP of that thread when I was building my 79 CJ.

At the time I decided to go with the HEI distributor upgrade because it was simple one wire hook up and did away with the Motorcraft "Brain" that fails so regularly. Here is a link to what I ordered off eBay. The one in the link is for a 304 but if send a message to the poster he sells the 258 for the same price. This is a simple upgrade, you simply remove your old distributor and install this one and then hook a single wire that is powered continuously when the key is on.

Also a link to the MC2100 carb.

As much as I've heard this *AND* carried a spare for years, I've never seen one fail! Mine was an OEM Motorcraft "blue grommet" that was used when I got it from R.Britt 11 years ago... now it's been in a CJ for the better part of 2 years in GA.

My brothers '84 CJ had the same "blue grommet" box it left the factory with... still working fine.

As for all this carb crap, I remain a huge fan of the 2100. IMO, it's the best 2bbl offroad carb around... ran one for years. However, the difference between a 2100 & even a simple GM TBI is night and day! Easier starts, cooler running, will run at angles that will make even the famed 2100 will choke & sputter!

Tater was so impressed with the TBI over the 2100 when I swapped it onto my 304 a couple years ago, he decidied to completely skip the 2100 (despite having all the parts... which is FOR SALE ) and grabbed the TBI setup from a 4.3L. Needs another hour or so of underhood "cleanup", but runs MUCH better than the BBD ever did!
