so here is the mess im in..... i replaced the motor mounts and headers last week. when i went to start the rig (88 sami) she would not go into gear. (was running fine before i worked on her). the weird thing is she shifts fine when off, but wont go into gear when running. i replaced the cable and nada. no idea whats going on, and this is way out of my league. any thoughts or help would be appreciated

When you try to go in gear does the rig want to move while you are trying to push it in? Kinda sounds like the clutch wont disengage. If you have the rig off then put it in gear and then start it will it move with the clutch depressed, or try to?

yes it tries to move when im pushing it in. and when i try to start it in gear it jumps really hard.

Adjust the cable. Sounds like you're not getting enough pull on the clutch arm. You should have about 1" of free play at the top. You need to adjust it both at the arm and the bracket bolted to the motor. Also, the pawl that it attaches to at the pedal cluster can break or the splines can wear. Check it and make sure it's in good shape.

make sure the braket that holds the cable is bolted to the block and is in the correct place and the cable is secured in it, then just get most all the slack out of the cable, if it was ok before you started it has to be somthing you done so just go back over it and im sure it will be somthing simple or overlooked, good luck man!!

scared to death!!!!!

Cable is tight in the bracket and bracket is tight on the engine. I adjusted the slack out of the cable until there was just a little bit of play in the clutch arm...through out this process the pedal has felt like its not disengaging til the pedal is almost all the way down
