I have to fix the front drive shaft on the xj. The old one has a cv style joint that is junk, and I want to replace it with a newer, larger shaft. any ideas?? Here are some pics of the old style and the new one.

I'm guessing you have an NP 207. I was under the assumption that you'd have to change the front output from an NP231 to use the double cardan CV, but someone on here said there was adapter at one time. Let me see if I can find it.

Ok, I found the old thread, but there wasn't really much info there. You may be able to just unbolt the flange and swap in the yolk from an NP213 or you might have to split the case and change the entire front output shaft. I'm not entirely sure anymore. LOL

splitting the case is not an option at this point, just need to get the damn thing running again for the farm. I would probably switch transfer cases first, I believe that would be just as easy. I was hoping to find an end for the U-joint that I could just bolt back up, even if I had to drill it out to match the bolt pattern. It goes together just like the rear drive shaft of my van, but the joints are much smaller.

Well then, pull the case and verify the input spline count, head down to the PAP in charlotte and grab a 231 off of the many XJs in the yard. The only problem is that most of the cases down there are going to be 23 spline and I believe that may be 21 spline depending on what engine/tranny is in there already. Splitting the cases to change over the input gear may still be needed. It's really not that big of a job to do.

i've done this conversion before but i didn't find the parts? it bolted up fine (tcase) same with the drive shaft but the shift link-age was a problem

any other ideas?? maybe someone that can make it work??

I may have a part that will help you, call me & you can come by & take a look
