I am baffled with my TJ it has a 4" in rough country lift and an 8.8 LS other then that it is a stock 4 cylinder 5 speed.

The problem I am having is when I take off in first gear I get 3 or 4 loud clunks like something is loose or shifting. It only does it on take off in first gear, all other shifts are fine no vibrations nothing. It I take off real slow it does not do it. I have pulled both front and rear axles and check all bushings and re torqued every bolt on the suspension. It sounds like it is coming front the center of the jeep.

I even adjusted the pinion angle because it appeared like maybe I was getting some axle wrap on take off (I know that is very difficult with a coil for link suspension but I was looking for anything) and the rear drive shaft might be binding but nothing has taken care of it, it does it in 4x4 and 2 wheel drive.

Anyone have any suggestions on what I should check next?

Check your motor mounts I had one that was shot and that was the problem. You wont get axle wrap in a 4 link either. The only time I ever heard mine was when I was wheelng and crawling

check the adjusters on the 8.8's disc brakes as I had mine clicking before.

Does it sound like its from right under the center console? Mine pops like that and I think it might be coming from the t-case shifter but I haven't ever done anything about it

- check your motor mounts, (good time for a MML if they are bad)
- Transmission mount
- T-case shifter linkage. try pulling up on the shifter just slightly (take out the slack) and take off, if it doesn't make the noise anymore then you know what it is.

My 98 6cyl has done the same thing since I bought it on 03..

It only does it in 1st gear. It always seems to do it if I get on the gas, but if I take it easy it doesn't always....

If something breaks, I'll let you know.

That has been my idea for about a month now I have checked everything and can't find what is loose. So now I have started doing hole shot launches at every light trying to finish breaking what ever is loose. I have checked every mount from the motor to the transfer case. I've kind of ruled out mounts due to the fact it is a 5 speed and the shifter does not move when it happens.

This problem really sucks because I haven't been able to trust it to go to URE. I really want it to just finish breaking so I can fix what ever is wrong. I think I am going to take it to URE with a tow vehicle this weekend and see if Kodak rock will finish it off. :driver:

While you're checking, check the bolts on the skidplate/crossbmember, since everything mounts to that. Motor mount seems like a likely culprit that would be difficult to check.

Mine was the bolts to the lower control arms being loose and causing rear axle to move everytime I went from reverse to
1st. Found out people that installed lift over tightened bolts and trashed them, replaced the bolts and nuts and been good for the last year!

Thats what I thought was my problem but as I said in my origianal post I pulled both front and rear 4 link arms and all bushings looked good, I did find one of my lower cam bolt was loose but it is tight now and I am having the same problem.

I am going to drop the transmission/transfer case skid pan tomorrow and check the the transmision mounts see if they are bad.

Try this before you go through the trouble... both my 97 and my dad's 98 does this, all i do is pull up on the shifter slightly and it goes away, that is until it falls down a little. Basically all you need to do is move it up a 1/4 of an inch, this puts tension on the linkage and bushings for the t-case shifter and makes the noise go away.

Just throwing that out there, It may save you some time in the end. Mine has been making the noise for 2 years, with 4 hard wheeling trips to boot, if that is in fact your noise then i wouldn't worry about it...

If it is the noise you can probably fix it by putting in new bushings on the t-case shifter, or going aftermarket with a novak adaptor.

I found the problem the transmission mount came out in three pieces it was totally destroyed. I put a new one in last night and everything is working great now, it is just amazing that it is a straight drive and I could not feel the shifter move at all under acceleration.

Anyways I test it this weekend planning on spending Saturday night at Arrowhead campground so hopefully I got everything fix.

This sounds like my problem I replaced my clutch and had to cut the exhaust hanger that welds to cat. converter to remove skidplate/trans and when I got it all back together it just sounded like exhaust rattle. I went wheeling this past weekend at the river and now when i start off in 1st the shifter is violently shaking back in fourth and there is a rattling sound and if im facing down hill and let out slowly its fine. 2nd thru 5th there is no vibration but the rattle is still there Any clues anyone. this is my dd its a 2.5 5spd 0lift

It is very useful information to some extent. Please help me out regarding this topic going on. Any DB members tell me to what exact direction discussion is going on now?
