Help with Driving a vehicle to DMV for Road Test?

I have an F250 that I will be using to tow a 40' Haulmark with 24' of RV area and 16' of garage. It has 6000lb triple axles. This makes the rating of the trailer 18K lbs. I will not be towing that much weight. Probably only about 12k lbs actual weight.

Naturally, I need a non-commercial Class A driver's license. This requires a written test and a road test.

The road test is a Catch 22. I'm wondering if the examiner will ask how I got the truck and trailer to the office? As well as if he/she get's picky and I flunk the test. They probably aren't going to let me leave with it.

Any ideas?

Show up with anyone. No one will question that. Why would you bring someone with you, if you they didn't have the class cert. to drive your rig. Although, they may have to be able to drive away, if you fail... That being said, you now need to hope that none of those dill holes at the DMV look at this board... And if you are.... I HOPE YOU ALL DIE, AND GO TO HE*L. Especially you, the ugly old bitch at the Golden Gate shop. ctr, with a lisp. I have looked at you for 15 yrs + today.

I think that was a rant...

Couldn't be as bad as the one at Sanford DMV. I got into it with her last time I renewed. I have a CDL, but under a medical exemption, where I don't need the medical card. She had never heard of such a thing. They also do not have a full regulation book there at the office, not even the HP trooper next door, they all had the abridged version that conveniently skipped over my exemption.

Long story short, I had to go home, print out that section of the federal motor vehicle regs, and the state form you fill out for the exemptions (they didn't even have the form), then go back and argue with her all over again, even with the paper work in-hand. Finally got my license when I sat at her desk, pointed to the phone, and told her to just call her boss in Raleigh and ask. She was afraid to do that -- probably had to many dings in her personnel record for stupidity, so she gave me my license.

Bad part, the over half-day lost trying to renew my CDL still pisses me off, she still works there, and my 5 years is up and I renew again in a few months. I know I'll have to deal with her again.

Those of you in Sanford know exactly who I'm talking about, I bet. ;)

I was not asked about how the rig and trailer got there. Worst case..."my buddy did; he had something to go do and will be back in a bit."

I'd help but don't get up to North Raleigh often...when were you going to do it?

I passed the written test this morning and received the learner's permit.

Since I have the permit, I would just need someone to accompany me to the road test.......just to be perfectly legal. I realize I may get away with it, but what if I don't?

I wouldn't need anyone to drive the vehicle...whether they have the cert or not. I'm not sure about some of the comments above.

I'm hoping to do the road test the week of March 24th during the morning.

Oh well, thanks anyway.

At least you get English! The folks in W-S off Patterson don't understand plain English anymore... something about a 25:1 "spanish speaking" population here...

Patterson Sucks. I have had way to many road calls to the place when drivers failed or they didn't bother to pre trip the truck and trailer before they went there. Its not much fun working on something while the DOT stands there and watches your every move.

Well..after trying to arrange someone with a Class A license to accompany me to the DMV for the road test, all attempts have fallen through.

I'm out of options.

I guess I will drive up there, and hope for the best.

Scratch that. Something came up, so we'll try again later in the week.

With the DMV having 8-5 operating hours, it is tough to find someone to help. Most people with the Class A are working people, so they are not available during the work day.

Also, I didn't grow up in the triangle, so I don't know a lot of people like back home in SouthEastern NC.

I've even offered to pay someone.

It is so difficult trying to be legal. I guess if I wasn't an American, they wouldn't care.

Oh well, enough venting. Hopefully, things will work out. I have until the end of April before I need to travel with the trailer. If I haven't gotten the license by then, what do I do....drive to DMV alone and chance it......or travel with a Class C license and chance it?

Tough decision. Drive into the Lion's Den so to speak, or keep getting lucky. Since I know I need the license, luck will not bail me out.

Well, we got the license today. Wasn't too big a deal.

They didn't ask how I got it there, but I was covered with a friend.

We checked lights on truck and trailer, and that's all. Took off down the road, and came back.

That was it.

That's good to hear. I took the written last week and will take the driving this week. Guess I'll chance going up on my own as well.
