hey i just installed a lock right in a dana 35 and its sliping bad and making a awful poping noise the teeth looked pretty good and everything im sure someone out here has has the same problem and info would be greatly apprechied thanks

noise while driving straight or turning? Under load or coasting? It will make a popping noise when you are turning. Thick gear oil like 95W-140 helps.

Did you re-use the thrust washers from the side gears? They need to go on the lock-rite.

He did,

from what I have been reading its the springs. Here a link to a rebuild kit.

Of course if anyone thinks differently, Speak up.

Edit:

Looks like it can only slip in between the coupler and the driver, The pins hold it in place and it can't spin on the pin. So I really can't see how the springs would cause it to slip. I am leaning toward worn thrust washer, Could also have been the cause of his spider gear failure.

Does this make sense?

my .02

lock-rites are cheap for a reason. i have friends running them and they love them. i tried one and hated it. slipped, popped, jerked, all the time. turning, going straight, under load, when coasting. all the time. i reused the thrust washers when i installed it, so i took them out. didn't help. installed thicker thrust washers, made it worse. Finally took it out, sold it, and bought something else.

i went today to get a set of thurst washers and the jeep place doesnst have them and they said they dont wear out only replace them if there broke idn get some differnt springs gonna try that, what if i doubled the thurst washers because i have play in the axel i can push it in and out 1/4 of a inch

get rid of it and get an aussie. better yet can the 35 and intsall the aussie in a better axle. i have an idea what your talking about with the lock right i have a d35 lock right sitting on the side of my tool box because it would unlock and jerk the jeep sideways just cruising along or lock up like a spool when turning without giving it any power. also removed 2 ez lockers for the same crap. thats why i rec. an aussie locker their tolerances are much better and they will help you with any problems even talk you throu the install over the phone if needed!

This is going to sound a bit harsh but why take one lunchbox locker and replace it with another. Get a real full-case locker like a Detroit and be done with it. I see so many people trying to save a couple dollars on a locker and end up with so many more problems, multiple installs, lots of lost time, etc. I don't see savings in the end. Could there be something actually wrong with the locker components? Perhaps, but like someone said above, they are cheap for a reason.

this is his dd. he busted the spider gears is the main reason he installed the locker

MAYBE, he damaged the carrier as well and that is leading to these problems with the lock-rite. just a thought.

I had the same problem with a lock rite, the popping and loud "ping" when it would slip, even going strait. I fixed it by scrapping it. I would suggest a 8.8

The spider gears weren't damaged enough to have hurt the carrier.

I saw them they were crewed a little, But no major chunks in the bottom of the diff.

He has my old carrier and ring gear, i ran a lock rite in it just fine.

Adam,

I have a buddy that works for a rear end shop in Concord, He said he could get the Spider Kit for cost, If your interested. I will call and try to get a price today. You have to pay shipping from his shop or drive to get them.

Just have to see how much it saves you.

just another thought. The LR is very picky about tire sizes as well. Both rear tires need to be the same size. Measure them and check your tire pressure. Years ago I blew up two D-35 Loc-rites when my new 33" bias ply tsl's weren't the same size.

i never really thought about it but if you have a bent axle tube the locker will never act right . it may have also been the cause of the spider gears breaking. if u need some spiders to get you by i prob have some i ll give you .

He has some on the way.

I have been thinking about this also, He has my old Ring, Pinion, and carrier. I was running a LR in and it worked great for about a 100 miles, then I busted a shaft at the Farm Event. Being feed up with the D35, I swapped in an 8.8.

That being said, The carrier could have gotten bent when shaft bust or when I busted the spider gears before installing the LR.

Then again it could just be the D35 being a D35 and busting spiders. Its just odd about the LR.

does it unlock and jump to any particular side or bang hard only in one direction ? if so remove the locker and turn everything around so it will turn the other direction sounds odd but i did do that once and it worked cant explain why but it did.
