Help with trailer hubs

I was wanting to put some new wheels and tires on my trailer and was going to put new hubs on it in the process. I took one of the old ones off and took it to a local store and was told I couldn't change the hubs. Just wanting to make sure that's accurate. If so I'll just try to find some tires that fit the current wheels. Any help is appreciated!

The answer has a bit of variety as more than 1 manufacturer made MH axles and a couple different styles exist.

On my old axles 6,000lb Dexter Hub assemblies were a direct replacement.
Ive actaully converted about 6 sets of MH axles with standard 6,000lb hubs, but I have also ran into one that the bearing size wasnt a match...

Northrn carries the 6k lb dexter assemblies and is easy to return stuff to if it doesnt work..

Just went and pulled an old receipt...you want a Dexter Part # 42655 assembly.

If you want to order it : http://www.crofttrailer.com/42655-6-on-5-1-2-hub-assembly-6-000-lb-pair/#page=page-1

If you want to keep the brakes that's a whole lot more work...and involves cutting and welding and then the part cost and time equals a new axle.

I think a 6k Dexter straight with ez lube...is about $490 from Trailer Parts 4 U in Greenville, SC

If you can't have brakes, that doesn't sound like much of a swap candidate. Need to have brakes on all axles by law.

Thanks for the help Ron. I would like to have the brakes so I'm not sure which route I'll go. Really don't want to drop that much cash on it

Carolina rim and wheel in charlotte deals with trailer parts as well, from your typical utility trailers up to tractor trailers. I think they sell to the public.

Uhhh. WHAT?

How do yall have landscape trailers in NC?

If the trailer weighs over 4k gross, it has to have brakes on all axles.

you sure about that, my 7500lbs rated trailer has brakes on a single axle. Kaufman built it that way.

Yup.

The old men of the internet get all exercised talking about mythical shit like GCVWRs and how you might be held liable or how your insurance might not cover you if you have too many GCVWRs. But not having working trailer brakes is a pretty significant indication of negligence on the part of the driver.

You made me do some research because I didnt think this could be right...primarily because of how much equipment is arranged including some semi-trailers.
Turns out the law say:
Every semitrailer, trailer, or separate vehicle attached by a drawbar or coupling to a towing vehicle of at least 4,000 lbs., and every house trailer weighing at least 1,000 lbs., shall be equipped with brakes controlled or operated by the driver of the towing vehicle.

So you are required to have brakes but not on every axle.
I can buy that, it jives with other states.

is that SC or NC?

What weight rating are you looking for? Lee equipment in sanford has complete brake 3500 axles for 195. Cheapest I found.

It says every axle has to have brakes somewhere else.

I am heading will get there number. Not sure if he has an Internet presence and he also only does cash sales. His price on rims is also the best I have seen.

NC.
SC Says over 3k must have means to stop it with tow vehicle(not separate brakes). If its under 3k it can run away....seriously.

Please let me know if you get his number. I'll see if I can find him online when I get home tonight

Just Googled him real quick, no website, just a Facebook page. I got a number from the search, I'll give him a call Monday and see how it goes.
