His compressor was toast, so we replaced that, and it had been converted over to r134 previously, so just figured we'd do the same with the new compressor.
Problem is, it pulled vacuum fine with the "adapter" valves, but when I try and charge the system, it won't take any r134. it's like the adapter valve isn't allowing the air to get into the compressor. Any idea what could be causing this? the new compressor does cycle on if I bypass the low pressure cutoff switch.
I'm stumped, we picked up new valves, but that didn't help.

Could be the schrader valve isn't being depressed. (either on gauges or compressor)

I sprayed some from my gauge through the adaptor valve from AZ (it had adapaters on it, but I thought maybe the ones it had were bad. So replaced em, no different) to make sure the adapter was depressing. AS near as I can tell from looking, it seems that the adapter gets depressed but nothing seems to press into the valve on the compressor. Looking at the compressor, there doesn't appear to be anything TO be depressed. the old one was this way too?
Stupid old r12 things.

The silver reflection is way down in there, and is not a schrader valve. So I was assuming it's just open?

This pic kind of shows it better being way down below?

Do those big caps come off? Looks like some sort of king valve that you would open up to allow gas into the system. With no schrader that would have to be the case.

Those older Renix 4.0's with the Sanjen a/c compressors do have a screw type shut off valve to the service ports. screw those big silver caps off, and you'll see a little stem sticking out with a square end. Either a 12 point socket, or open end wrench will screm them open. You pulled a vacuum on the hoses for your gauge, not the actual a/c system on the jeep. Be sure and close those service ports back to ensure there is no leak.

That's what I was thinking but didn't know they had them on vehicles. Only need to turn the stem open just a tiny bit.

Yep, got it today.
It was a square peg, so just used vice grips. Turn right to open.

pulled vacuum for really real this time, and then it seems to be good, closed it all back up after filling and it's blowing nice and cold inside.

Now if only I could fix my own AC.
