I just bought a Jeep and I would like to ride a few novice trails close to home.
Any sudgestions?? I you could give me a few places to ride I will be very thankful.

Peter

Two places close, but not all that. Brown Mnt. From Morganton take Hwy 181 about 16 miles out, turn right just after sign to go to Table Rock. Little store on the right. Loof for signs.

Richland rd off of Hwy 321N between Lenoir and Blowing Rock. Look for Richland rd on the right.

Richlands as Chip describes is a great place to start. Easy to find and easy trails. Great scenery. It even ends up in Blowing Rock on the Blue Ridge Parkway, if you know how to get through the trails.

Thanks for the quick responces. Man that is just what I am looking for. I will pull up Richlands on the map.

Rob,
My wife and I lived in Winterville, NC for two years. Preston trails subdivision, I can't rember what road it was off of.

Peter

Awesome. I'm not familiar with that subdivision. I live near the new Harley Davidson shop just off of Forlines Rd.

I lived in Hickory for 18 years until I moved to Greenville area to go to ECU.

I lived in North Pines subdivision just off of Sandy Ridge Road. In the St. Stephens school district.

My parents still live there.

Chip, is South Mt. in Morganton still open??? Near Enola Rd. exit off of I-40. or the back way off of Hwy 10.

Its close and used to be a decent place to ride. Been there several times with the Trailblazers and numerous other times with friends.

Rob

I know that most of the roads around south mtn were washed out last year, I don't know if they've been repaired yet.

In hickory...you could go behind the super walmart. :flipoff2: (I kid).

The road you are refering too is the "old CC road" and no, it isn't open any longer. The state bought it up and it's now part of the State Park. Well, let me correct that, it's closed to vehicles, you can hike it, or ride horses. Any Road in this area other than the ones I mentioned before is on private land or are not leagle to ride on around here.

Oh man. That south Mountain area was a nice close place to ride.

It used to ride right along the South Mountain State Park property line and had entrances to the park for horses and hikers. Too bad it closed.

I found that place behind Walmart and another behind the old K mart. When my brother gets here tomorrow with his jeep we will give them the old college try.

I posted on carolinatrailblazers.com awhile back about trail here in Hickory and no one responded. Is that group is active very little posts on that BBS.

Enjoy the no tresspassing tickets. If you want to trail ride (stock only, waste if you are modded) hit Brown Mountain

Stay out of there. We get enough bad press as it is, especially around here. Go with what Chip said. If youneed someone to go sometime, drop me a line. But again, please stay out of the illegal areas.

I had no problems behind the old Kmart. I went there before I reread this post, I guess that I just got lucky.
How do you know if a place is illegal? I did not see any NO Tresspassing signs, just a place to drive into. I am 33yrs old and a father and I have no intention of upsetting any property owners or getting myself arested.

Uglyjeepoffroad-I may take you up on that offer of riding with you some time. Any local knowlede would help this first time Jeep owner.

Don't take me as being a smart ass with ya but, do you have any no tresspaing signs in your front yard? People could say your driveway was just a place to drive into with that kind of thinking. If you want to know if a place is legal, ask the property owner. If you do not have written permission from the owner of the property, then what you are doing is illegal. As far as powerlines go, you would need written permission from the land owner and from the power company that has right-of-way for the power line.

The fourwheeling community is looked down on by many because they have the idea that we are a bunch of rednecks out tearing up peoples property. As tempting as it is, going places without permission just makes them right.

Go out to legal places like richland road and brown mountain and you will have a lot more fun because you dont have to be looking out for the popo all the time.

Oh and PS if you go to richland road, stay on the main trail. 99% of the side roads are illegal also.

point being is that its not your property and you know its illegal, sings or not.

If you go out there (behind K-mart or Wal Mart) don't call me or anyone else on this board expecting them to help you out if you end up in jail or whatever...

Csn't a guy make a rookie mistake? Now that I am learning the ropes I will stay legal. As I posted above, I have been looking for places to go wheeling. I did not know that I needed permission for some places ( back roads etc..). I assumed that if I did not hop a fence it was ok to dirve on. From this point forward I will stay where it is legal. It was sure hard as hell to convince my wife that we needed a Jeep, that I never want to tell her that I ran into Johhny Law.

Thanks for the heads up.

Peter

I think there is a ride setup for Cracker's neck/ Caliente, Tn (about 20 mins past Boone) on the second weekend in October. You can find details on the Jeep short wheelbase board at OffRoad.com

I may be taking a run up to Brown Mountain before that, just drop me a PM and I will see if I can work something out. I have some repairs to make to the Commando right now, but they should be done in the next week or so.
If you want to come by, talk wheeling, and check out the rig, drop me a line too.

And Caver...
