i just got a new high lift. I was wanting to put it on the outside of the jeep because the inside is so limited already. I was thinking about the hood but I'm not to sure thats what i want to do. The back bumper would be ok but i was wondering where you guys put yours for some unique out of the way places that are still easy to access if i needed to. Thanks for the help.

P.S. the automobile is question is a tj

We can fab up some brackets, Might try to get it closer to the hood than this one, Seems high to me, Might block your view up that high.

Or we could come up with something like this, Mounted to the rear door hinge

Or behind the seat

one bad thing about the hood, my buddy put one on his tj and it blocked the windshield washer squiters. something to think about. chris.

Ive had it (48in) on the front bumper, on the hood (used KC light brackets mounted to the hinges) and then made brackets to strap it to the roll bar behind back seat. Its nice that it doesnt get full of mud, and easier to use when not all rusted out...plus harder to steal. Let me know if you need pics
similiar to this:

I know on my old yj i had a plate at the bottom of the rollbar behind driver seat. It set up-right and straped to the bar.

thats if you have the room in the tj. ( Plus it keeps it out of the weather. )

Thought about the front bumper? ( on top )

Also be prepared to man handle the 40 pounds or so onto and off of your hood. I saw a guy beat the hell out of his new JK's hood with one. It can be a little cumbersome to manage. I like the tailgate hinge location. Easier to handle and no vision interfearance. Good Luck!

LOL, never thought about that one, but I can def. see that happening. That must have been funny to see.

I use to just lay mine on the floor behind the 2 front seats in my CJ. I had to take the top clamp-piece off, but I never used that anyways.

He was pissed, It wasn't even his flat tire we were fixing. I think I might throw one under the back seat in my JK, or in the rear. I like the thought of it not being exposed to theft or water or mud.

I had mine on the front bumper..not the best place but it worked..and Northern Tool has lockable High lift mounts..

I would mount it vertical on the rear bumper ot tail gate.......I done like the idea of using it for a bumper.....If you drive like sam then you'd bend it very fast

I always was meaning to install mine behind the rear seat on the CJ fenderwells, just never got around to it.

For my racerig XJ, I was pressed for time; I picked up a Hi-Lift 4XRAC at Northern and just bolted it to the floor. I just noticed the listing on my link there says "Includes lock."...that's not true. It does have a hole that allows you to use your own lock.

I've ran a high-lift for a long time w/ different mounting locations. I'd also say to install it inside in the dry.
I know the high lift is heavy, awkward, dangerous, and most of the time, when used a rig with alot of flex, you also have to somehow, strap up the axle to the frame, or you will run out of jack before the wheel is off the ground.
I also know that the hi-lift is capable of many other functions including the ability to act as a winch or come along.
But I am starting to wonder if a small, light weight, well built bottle jack with a cupped axle mount would be much better. Thats what I have brought along more and more lately.
Has anyone ever used the big ole jack for any other reasons, besides lifting? I know what the list says it can do, just wondering if anyone ever really uses it for anything else.

I used it as a comealong when I failed to 'split the gap' while cutting some trees in my backyard. The tree I was cutting landed on another tree, I pulled the base of the tree sideways like 30ft so it could slide down the tree it was resting on. My initial evalutation was that 4ft would do it, but after I topped out the jack, only 4 more ft...and 4 more...that sucked. Hindsight tells me I had better options, like running to tractor supply for a comealong!
I have also used it for clamping something, I can't for the life of me remember, but I was pretty impressed my convoluted plan actually worked. I think I was re-forming something, I remember thinking this isnt gonna work, but what the heck.

As dangerous as hi-lifts are, mount it inside. When they are exposed, the pins get rusty and they don't work very well after about 6 months. My vote is inside. Also, don't over complicate your mount. Some nice 1/2" grade 8 hardware can make a great mount.

if you choose to mount it inside, make SURE its mounted well.

Dont want that thing flopping around in your passenger cabin if you take a spill.

Exactly and exactly. Needs to be mounted inside if you're actually going to use it. My mount in the bronco and heep consists of 2 1/2" bolts welded to the cage, one having a nut with a washer and bigassed "wings" welded on. Easy as shit to use and make. I don't see why anyone would mount it to the hood? Looks like a pita.

Just saying.:flipoff2:
