High school Athletics

back in the day, we had high school wrestling practice every day thru the winter, except Sundays, Christmas and Jan. 1. I don't think we were allowed to start until either Dec. 1. or the Monday after Thanksgiving.

Busiest travel weekend of the year, and if I decide to to my kid out of town, then she gets punished. that says 2 things to me; High School sports are more important than family and the Coach has the right to undermine my authority as a parent.

Maybe I just have a different mentality about sports than most Americans. It's just not that important.

I'll be the first to say that these girls need all the practice they can get, but not at the cost of my family having to cut their holidays short because he's having a power trip.

I do think it is a bit ridiculous how much time some high school sports seem to be requiring these days. They're not professionals, and they're not on scholarship. However, devil's advocate here...your daughter has the option to show up or not. I assume she had some inclination of what the practice schedule would be when signing up for this commitment. If she doesn't go and has to run/do drills/etc when she gets back...that could be considered a fair alternative to the girls that did show up. 30 minutes of running/drills for a week makes up for the 2-3 hours worth of practice time missed, that the other girls put in on Friday.

Can't say I disagree with that. That's pretty logical. And I'm not against kids having to do more exercise. :D

Well...it's what my coaches always told me...I still think they were power tripping @$$holes. But 'in the name of fairness' sounds more elegant.

Agree with Ben (shocking I know)...but also its worth a call or email to the coaches.
Usually if its a legit family reason its forgiven if its a childish excuse its not.

I tried six ways from Sunday to get in touch with the coach. The school is closed and the phone only goes to a dead end voice mail. There's no email listed for the coach. And since the coach is male none of the girls can have his number. The last of which I can't help but understand.

At this point.. Oh well.

Shrug I wouldn't sweat it then.

As a parent of an 8th grader (who competes in school football, wrestling, baseball and track) I have every coach's email address and phone number stored in my phone.

Id let this one go and then if you can Monday Id stop by practice and talk with the coach.
I'm all for coaches teaching discipline to students who dont get it at home, but in my case I got the basics covered I just need some additional support from "the village" coach. And if coach cant understand we will get the higher ups involved.

Wait... but if the coach were female, they could have her home number?

Pretty standard deal really in most high school sports.
I know here in NC when I was coaching high school football we made it to the third round of the state playoffs we had practice ON
Thanksgiving day.

However, I do believe that high school sports are blown way out of proportion and that most coaches are power tripping. Practicing over Christmas Break is another one that is aggravating.

Fall Sports practice in the summer.
Winter Sports practice over the holidays.
Spring Sports practice over spring break.
