Hip Replacement

I have been having problems with my leg for a few months now and finally went to the doctor yesterday. Before you say "why wait a few months before going" the reason is that I was in a pretty bad wreck 19 years ago and live with a pretty constant level of aches and pains and honestly just thought it was part of that and would pass. Anyway, the doctor took some Xrays and broke the news to me that I need a hip replacement. He went over the surgery and what would be done, but I was hoping to find someone on here who may have had it done so I can find out what I can really expect from this. How long is the recovery time? Once healed up, would I be good as new or would I be crippled/hindered for the rest of my life? Will a new hip typically last me the rest of my life or will I have to have it replaced every 20 years the way I have seen people with knee replacements? I am 34 now, so it is possible that I will be on this earth for another 40 years, hopefully. Any information you can give would be great. Honestly, even jokes would be appreciated cause frankly I am pretty bummed out about this.

At 31...I'll be in the same boat soon, I've dislocated both sides and I'm told tons of scar tissue/calcium deposits in the areas...and being over 300lbs isn't helping either. That said, I know several folks that are full go again in under 2 weeks. Had a boss that was out a week and came back to work with a cane and was off of that within a couple days. So recovery time looks relatively quick to me. As to how long it'll last, I keep hearing 10-15 years and can only have 2 of them, so push them off as long as possible.

years back, my grandmother at the age of 94 had hip replacement. Was up walking the same day, back to normall in a couple weeks.

No personal experience thus far thank god! Friend of mines wife had hip surgery yesterday at 60ish years old and is already recovering g fast! Just try to use mins over matter when it comes to pain those meds now a days will have you thinking you need em when ya really don't! good luck man I know a 16year old boy that's state champion wrestler that has had hip surgery at 8 and has to have it again at 30 but it's degenerative hip disease so may not be the same with you do research on long term affects tell em ya want some bionic hip so ya part cyborg gotta make it cool somehow!!! We'll keep ya in our prayers tho!

I really appreciate yall's responses. Depending on how quick I can drop the weight will depend on soon I can get this done as well. I am 329 pounds now and I need to get my BMI to below 40 so that is roughly 60 pounds I need to lose.

Met a guy on the Appalacian Trail one time that had it a couple years prior. Was doing good, but I doubt his would last 20 years.

this is all i have other than to say I hope all goes well for you.

My dad at age 63 just had one. His was a combination of severe gout and a martial arts injury from 30 years ago.
2 weeks later he's already walking normal.

I had to wire a high end water softener/filtration system in my former boss' home. This thing had multiple heavy components, I am not a little guy & I was feeling the burn.

Anyway, the guy delivering the system was helping unload right along side of us (in his 60's) & I thanked him for helping. He said he was a year into having his hip replaced (so bad, it would come out of socket if his leg hung loose getting up into the delivery truck).

Said he was walking the halls the next morning, kept gaining speed from there. Runs/walks up & down bleachers every day.

This guy was stocky, not thin at all...loves the new hip.

Long story short, good luck!!

How did the pain start in the hip what did it feel like reason I ask is because my hip is been hurting for two or three weeks sharp pains not sure why although it May have something to do with being thrown out of a vehicle or being run over kind a has me worried

How did the pain start in the hip what did it feel like

Well honestly, I have had hip pain ever since the accident back in 1998. As far as this recent increase in pain over the past few months it has been mostly through my groin, over the top of my leg, and then down to the side of my knee. Basicly it follows the path of the hip flexor muscles. Other than walking, the most painful motions have been lifting my leg to get into a vehicle and even bringing my leg up to put on the sock on my right foot. Also getting up from a low chair or a low toilet is painful if I put too much of my weight on the right side.

My pains been going from the lower back hip down to the knee, hopefully shedding some weight will help

I had my knee replaced on Jan 12 and am at about 90% productivity right now and was back at work in 5 weeks. A guy I know from high schoool owns a plumbing comapny had his hip replaced a few weeks ago and was back at work pulling 10 hour days within a week and is still going strong.
