HMMWV rim ?

When recentering the HMMWV rims are they true enough to run on the highway or is this done for a trail only vehicle?

It also seems like when cutting the centers out & welding new ones in, it would make the rim out of balance to the point it would take a lot of excess weight to balance. Is this true or are there people running them on the highway?

Sorry if this is a repost but I didn't see much about these when searching. If there is already a post just give me a link & I'll read up more.

Thanks,
Rob

it helps if on the road at 65 if you have them balanced first.:driver::D

i know of at least 3 people who have recentered them themselves and daily drive on them without complaints....

I recentered mine and am running 38" SX's, total tire wheel combo weight is 174lbs. I have not had them balanced yet, and I don't have any vibes or shake until right at 60mph. Hopefully that will go away once I get them balanced, but they were just fine for driving from Lincolnton to Uwharrie last weekend.

Mine are re-centered, and I'm running 37" Iroks with about 2k airsoft pellets in each tire. They run fairly true at highway speeds.

But mine were re-centered by a machinist friend of mine and he's way anal about his work. I'd imagine they are within a few thousandths of being true. I've seen factory wheels with as much as 15 to 20 thousandths run-out though.

i did mine, and worst one was .030 out but wheel was slighly egged also. The others were in the .006-.015 range. Mine are unbalanced and they ride as well as 38 TSLs can ride. I've driven mine on the beltway doing 65 with np.

Guess I'm not sure why it really matters ? Is it just to get to the trail or DD ?

Thanks for all the replies.

yager, I'm asking so I know if I went this route if I would still be able to DD my truck.

That's one thing I was wondering, if you could get them set up enough at home or if it would require some sort of professional with a jig or something to get them to run true & if you welded too much of a bead in one spot if you would throw the balance off too much. Definately not an expert in this area but feel like I know just enough to make me ask questions about this stuff. lol

Is there someone local that recenters them?

Thanks

 Holy crap! That's 50 lbs more than my 38.5's on 'locks were.... Are all the Hummer setups this heavy?

Hell my 42's on 17" steels are around 140lbs.

Well, the SX's are the 10ply version, and I have the rubber runflats in the wheel, and the centers pretty much just add weight to the wheel. So to answer your question, no. The tires are 85lbs each per: http://www.intercotire.com/site30.php and IIRC the wheels were around 65lbs, runflats 10-15, and new centers probably 10lbs.
