HOLY CRAP.. please use jack stands..

^ I agree.. Whats the purpose of throwing away your life over at most a couple hundred bucks? I had a friend who dad died from the car falling on him then rolling over him due to not using jack stands and having it on a small incline in the drive way.

One more point, Its not like these are low $ DD and that is it, Many are for off road only and a second or third rig.....
You will pay for a winch to get you up the hill, or maybe a tow rig, or in some cases two or three rigs to play with and a trailer... also a roll cage to save your but....
When it comes to being safe working on the rig at home, no way going to spend money to save your but......
Just don't see it.
I know I sound like I care about you but I'm just making the point, and I know what it does to the family when they get the call that a kid had died doing something that could have been changed.

I use 2 logs that I cut just for working on the samurai. They are about 15 inches in diameter and 18 inches high and fit perfectly under my rock sliders. They were alot cheaper than store bought jack stands for high lift trucks and I trust them more.

I am not amazed at the video. Am I am more amazed by the conversation it started.

The trusty jack stand block debate. Put it simple. You build crap all the time. Jackstands are freaking simple to build and you can build them tall enough for your rig on dubs. Railroad ties work well to, but they are heavy and not very adjustable. I know I trust my $10 tall jackstands that i built more than the large ones I got from HF.

i understand what ur saying and like i said i wouldnt advise anyone on using them. whatever floats ur boat

When working on my truck or the car of the house I make sure I have the vehicle supported in 2 or more ways in the area I am working. So I have at least 1 failsafe if the jack stand or what ever I am using falls/breaks etc. No matter if you use blocks, wood, jack stands, etc making sure you have something else to catch the vehicle in case your primary holding agent fails is #1 in my book.

HF sells the 6 ton jackstands so cheap, there is no reason not to have at least one decent set. If you're taller than that, build your own. The hardest part of building a set of square tube stands is drilling the holes... Or you can build a screw jack. Either way, no excuse for using cinderblocks or working under a vehicle that is entirely supported by one jack (especially a hi-lift).

I try to knock my junk off the jack stands before I crawl under it to make sure it's on a steady base
This is a good practice. Especially if you are about to wrench on something that may be stubborn. You don't want to be under there pulling on a breaker bar with a pipe extender, & learn that lesson.

I think the video is staged the guy bearly turned the handel to get it to drop. Even techs that are retarted know to turn the handel all the way before they get under.

When I took auto shop, our teacher had us throw a tire w/ rim under the car somewhere in addition to using jack stands incase the car would fall. He also made us do the bump the car test to see if the jack stands were stable before getting under it. I know the tire/rim would take up a lot of room and probably be in your way, but if you have the room...I'd rather have a ruined rim/tire than squashed head.
Also, I don't trust hydraulics...wether it be a jack or a piece of machinery. I've had jacks fail or slip off of where they are positioned (bottle jack) and almost been crushed by a piece of farm machinery when the hydraulic line failed. So I never get under anything without stands (or more).
As some have said, when using CMU's (cinder blocks) in houses some are filled with concrete or grout and usually have rebar placed vertically in the core holes and have a cap for the load. Cinder blocks and concrete are extremely brittle when not reinforced and subject to point loads. A way to look at their strength is to compare them to an empty Coke can. When the can is standing upright, it can carry quite a load, we used to stand on them as kids...but tap the side while standing on it and it crumples. Cinder blocks are designed to stand stronger loads with the cores up and down and load spread over large distance, and can't take much weight or impact to the "face" wich is how most people misuse them.

yep. push it a bit... with the wheels still on to see if she moves.
Awhile back I was getting ready to do some work and I thought about the extra force I was applying with a break bar and the ghetto extension I had.... so from now on I check to see it budges.

Big Rick, so how much is your life worth? Please don't tell........
How much money you spent on Beer?
How much you spent on BS stuff for the Z71?
I would bet enough that you could have a set of gold plated extra tall jackstands if you wanted.....
I would bet if you ask your mom what the cost of your life is after the LOL and she picks herself up off the floor she will tell you more that a set of " ridiculous high priced jackstands "

Ok ok, your right, but I haven't spent any $$ on Beer, I hate the stuff, I had a million different kinds offered to me while I was still in college and never liked a single one, they all taste basically the same to me . . . bad :shaking:

Jack and cheerwine on the other hand ;) . . . . lol, I rarely drink thou to be honest, I know, I'm a slacker

anyway for lifting/holding I always end up just using my engine hoist with a tow rope to lift vehicles cause its easiest/most sturdy option I have found, but i wish i could find some jackstands that are about 3 to 4 ft tall, then I could actually have a safe setup, probably just need to make my own.

One day, a friend and I were using a screw jack to change the CV joints on my car. Right before we crawled under, my friend says "hey, how about we go borrow some stands from my neighbor? I just noticed that the jack we're using has a base that's about the size of a pack of cigarettes." Never worked without a pair of stands since, and even that still creeps me the hell out.

DEAR GOD WTF!

x2 on the tire and wheel under the vehicle.I always put one of mine near the area I am working on. It may not keep me from getting hurt, but it will help keep me from getting killed.

IThere's alot of stuff that i should like but I don't, for instance: chocolate, BBQ sauce, Sweet tea, steak, and I'm sure theres more :shaking:

WTF? You non-BBQ-eating, non sweet-tea drinkin' Communist - do you have ANY red-blooded Armerican?
I'm calling McCarthy.

I bet he voted for George McGovern
