Yeah it isn't perfect but it cost 3$.I got lucky and found a piece of stiff mesh to make a screen at the flea market.I added some gasket material around it.I took the material off my parts suzuki in the door jam.I also found a can of duplicolor that almost matched my CJ so I repainted the front of fenders and blended it in.

Thanks,I'm pretty happy with it.I just installed the swing away that I got from
Mark(mmcj7).That was a pain but worth it.I'll try and add pics of it also.I'll probably wait til I finish my Hella hood scoop.:shaking:

looks good. I bought one years back, painted mine flat black. That might look odd on yours, since the grill is already black.

What is the corrugated pipe coming out near the drivers side tire?

That was my cold air induction system.
Really,it was. This jeep just could'nt get enough air so I rammed a piece of pipe up to the carb from the fender well.I took it out tonight because I fashioned a hood scoop from an old vintage ?. I got it mounted earlier.I'll take some pics and add them tomorrow.I'll post what I used after testing folks first.
I'd like to try it at Brown and some places.Just need some frt shocks and it will be ready. Thanks,Daniel

Thanks for posting the pics. The scoop is a tag cover off the tail of a VW bug.The gasket under it is a rubber bungee with ends cut off it.The edging for where I cut the hood is out of the suzuki door jam.Gonna try and get the Hella lamp working today.(why not?)
Thanks again,Daniel

Years ago, I thought I wanted one of these too, Until I put it on. Then come heating issues! I took it off, then no more over heating.

engine over heating issues. At Higher speeds, it was like I completely covered the grill, not enough air flow through the radiator

I put one on my CJ shortly after I got it in 1993, temps seemed OK stock. When I upgraded to 4.10 gears, 33" tires, I would run real hot on the highway (3 spd T150, no overdrive), when I hit the high RPMs. I upgraded to 35"s, lowering the highway RPMs and the temp drop was marginal. I never considered removing the grill screen, would have if I thought of it. When I carnaged my radiator, I replaced it with a 3-row, it was drastically better, temps were way down well into the acceptable range at any RPM I could get to on the highway.

There are many times with my 3-speed that I wish I had another gear.Sometimes 2nd is too low and 3rd too high....What model trans could I install to get 4th gear? This jeep cruises on I-40 at about 60-65 comfortably but it is really wound at 70.Thanks

Do these mods help in the snow!!

Good looking Jeep Dan.

Ha-Ha.Yes,The screen helps tighten the front end so it's stronger when getting snatched out of snow or mud...
Good to hear from ya.

We'll have to meet up this spring at Brown Mtn and ride a little. I haven't been there for a couple years, but the last time I remember it wasn't much problem for a jeep but a good family trail ride.

4th gear won't help on the highway, it will still be 1:1 ratio like the 3rd gear you already have. Unfortunaltey, there are no overdrive transmissions that bolt up directly to 76-79 CJ drivetrains, and the overdrive transmissions used from 1980-86 are only medium duty at best.

As far as a 4spd, you could find a close ratio T18, but this is not a direct bolt-in either. AMC did use a wide ratio T18 in the 76-79 CJ's, but first gear is granny low, so effectively on the street, it is close to the T150 3 spd., except it has the additional granny low for stump pulling crawling/wheeling, etc.

I would like to do some wheelin with this jeep. The only wheelin I've ever done was with a lifted chevy beater. It was my trail maker. We just rode up trees til they fell. Thanks for the info on the tranny's.I guess I'll just have to deal with it.The screen does look good Boost.I kinda miss the grill look also.

Hunterdan, I just found your thread. Thats a good lookin jeep. Some of those parts look familiar. Are you taking it to the flats for the open invite or the up-coming ECORS race? May-be I'll see you there so I can check it out.
