home remedy for poison ivy?

I have pretty much have to go to the doctor everytime I get it. I got it in both eyes a few years back.

Whats the story on that? Looks like the worst I have ever seen.

Multiple screwups...
#1 - Knew I'd been in it, but washed with warm/hot water. Mistake that allowed the pores to open and the urushiol to flow in deeper. Use COLD water for the initial scrubbing!
#2 - Clorox... while it has worked for me in the past, it didn't this time!

Other contributing factors were the hot weather (sweating) & wearing long pants (abrading) to work. For those that claim "systemic" reactions are impossible... Pfff! :flipoff2:

I got it just as bad as Dave once... clorox is what caused it to look burnt in the pic (because it was)... after a while of bleach and alcohol not working and burning the skin, and the wound weeping constantly, I went to the doctor... he gave me steriods, and told me about the hot water trick, and said to wash it a few times a day, soak in salt baths, and put calimine during the day to keep it from itching...

took another week or so, but cured it up...

LAVA soap! Then put alcohol on it. Don't touch it. Wear mittens at bed time and take benadryl as often as you can. Especially at bed time. Lava soap cuts the oil and alcohol drys it out. I shouldnt have to explain the rest. Good luck to you guys. I know it sucks. I had it once as a boy, but I have yet to get it as an adult.

I've made a salt paste and put on there. It stings a little at first but quickly dries it out. I usually just do that at night. During the day I just use the calamine lotion and it seems to work OK.

x2

Friend of mine swears by fresh banana peels. He'll take the inside of a fresh banana peel and wipe it on the affected area, says it burns at first but really knocks out the itching and swelling for a while.

Never tried it personally, just my 2 cents.

I dated a nurse one time, and she swore that Ban roll-on deodorant was the best working home remedy. Just make sure you use a non-scented one and don't apply directly from the deodorant container if you plan on using the deodorant under your arms later! Scrape some off with a knife or something and apply it to the affected area. Haven't had an opportunity to try it myself and hope I won't.

Been soaking in salt baths, clairitin & benedryl, calidryl lotion. Today she seems to be feeling a little better.

Thanks for all the home remedy ideas

Just another thing to think about. A huting buddy of mine was hanging a tree stand on an old oak tree in the fall. He was cutting away all of these "vines" as he went. Come to find out they were of course poision ivy. Here is the word to the wise... be careful when you pee and when you wipe if you have come in contact with it...

He had to have a long stent of steroids to get it off his privates and out of his, well you know...

 that reminds me of a time when we went camping and we took a cousing with us that never was much of an "outdoors" type. We were roughing it to the point that we used leaves as TP in the woods. Cousin ended up using poison ivy on day 1 of a 5 day trop :lol:
