Hey all, looking into some home security options and would really appreciate ya'lls advice and guidance on which would be the best option. We just want to go pretty basic, door and window sensors, doorbell camera type system. I don't need or want all the home automation with electronic door locks and indoor cameras and all that extra fancy stuff...so please school me. Thanks in advance

We have/had SimpliSafe and I absolutely loved it. Easy to set up and maintain, easy to monitor through the app on my phone, and we bought a bundle at a Costco discount. You can buy as many parts to the system as you deem necessary, it was super easy to add new components. I think monitoring was around $22/month.

I’m going to install the system at our new house here in VA

I've been out of the industry since 2003.

I'm not sure what they would have to pay me to allow either into my home, but it would be north of 10x what they want me to pay them monthly.

Thank you very much for all the input, it definitely sounds like i need to look into Simplysafe...I really appreciate the guidance!

I went with a DIY system from suretyhome.com Monitoring is by alarm.com System is a Qolsys.

Used their hardwire converter for a few hardwire circuits (motions (actually IR beam), safe, etc). Everything else is wireless. Setup, install, and management are very easy. Had to hit their tech support a couple of times with questions (mostly about system design and layout) and it went well.

I put a separate system in the shop. Same brand/etc.

$19/month

I have guardian...it covers doors, windows, glass breaks, fire and carbon monoxide. So far it’s done a great job of sending fire trucks when my wife burns dinner and she’s busy consoling children scared of the alarm that’s going off, so she can’t get to the panel or her phone to cancel the alarm/call. The glass break alarms also do a great job of identifying when something like a pan gets dropped or a child hits just the right pitch when screaming. About a year ago, it also did a fantastic job letting me know someone was trying to break in, and they were sending the cops that are a half mile from my house...in doing so it gave me just enough time to leave work, get home, sweep the house, and greet the cops at the front door to let them know everything looked fine except a mangled door lock. But I can’t confirm whether the mastidane or the siren scared off the would be unwanted guest. Beyond that, it’s well worth the $64.99/month so my wife can feel safe and I don’t have to hear her bitch about needing an alarm system.

Cancelled CPI when we got a Belgian Malinois.
Dogs are statistically worthless against a burglar.
They are valuable for alerting you to grab your weapon when home. But someone who is willling to B&E aint thinking twice about killing a dog, or just letting him out to run.

I've got the K9 covered as well as the Glock(s), Hellcat, Shield, couple AR's and shotguns...but I would still feel better with something to protect the home and old-lady while I am away. She's a hell of a good shot with all weapons platforms, but I don't know if she has the killer instinct to use any of them against an intruder. Thanks again for the help

All I need is the alert. She's also quite a deterrent for anyone on the fence for an easy score. If you break in and don't kill her, you'll wish you had. She has different barks for how serious the situation is so I can tell the difference between "hey there's a squirrel" and "there's a strange person outside".

They also don't do much when you're out of town.

Police arriving an hour after an alarm goes off doesn't do a lot either except write a report. In all honesty, there's always someone staying at the house if we are out of town. Too many animals to just leave. I see ya'lls point, but even where I live is a deterrent. Bad people know the hills have eyes.

Any real world reasons?
