Homemade dana 44 dif covers

If you still want that DIY feeling in your tummy..... BTF DIY Diff Cover

I thought a homemade diff cover would be a cool project but I quickly realized how ridiculous it is to cut, bend, weld, and drill.

I thought a homemade diff cover would be a cool project but I quickly realized how ridiculous it is to cut, bend, weld, and drill.

I tried one of these, damn thing. Welded it & the flange raised up from the heat & weld draw. Had to have it faced to seal the diff fluid properly. I even tacked the flange to a 1" plate before welding it.

Happened on mine too. Before I took the time to face mine it took a hole tube of RTV to seal it :flipoff2:

So beefy. Almost unnecessary.

Anytime you weld on a flange it really needs to be flycut unless you're sealing exhaust and have a gasket that can take a lot of surface misalignment.

If you can find a local sandcast foundry, you can do some pretty cool shit too.

Stock Dana 44 thick cover with a 1/4" band added to the ring gear area. Made this one for a friend, I have Solid's on my stuff. Hard to beat for the price.

I can Vouch for James's covers, as I'm running that. The 1 pictured, ended up on the rear. Tie-rod didn't clear the front on, so James modified it. Not great pic, but you get the idea.
I do like that Syntec cover & price, but wonder if it would clear my tie-rod?
