well i got a small trailer that came with my hobiecat sailboat a few years ago. finally got around to wanting to register it and tag it. whats the process. i was going to do it a year ago and forgot the process.

go to dmv and get a stamped number plate to attacht, get a state trooper to inspect it, then he gives me a confirmation that it is inspected and safe, then take that to dmv for registration and tags?
^does that sound right

even if that is right can someone confirm that or give me the correct process

I don't know if the DMV can give you a stamped plate. That sure would be great if they do. It will make life easier. I talked to a officer about an old trailer of mine with a lost title and he mentioned taking it to a place that can do the stamping. He suggested a place that makes trailers. Once you have the stamp then the steps you listed are correct.

Go to DMV and tell them you built a homemade trailer (not bought: got it?). They will give you a form to fill out and they will issue you a NCX# to stamp on the tongue and back axle of the trailer.

Go get a stamp kit (Harbour Freight has them) and stamp it in so that it is legible right on the tongue and then again on the backside of the rear most axle. Do not weld the numbers on there, most won't accept this and you'll have to do it again.

Once you stamp the numbers you can legally haul the trailer down to the NCHP office (usually in the same building as the DMV) and an officer will walk outside, verify that the numbers are stamped legibly. He will sign off on the paper. Often they hold the paper and tell you to crawl up under the trailer and recite the number to them.

Take the paper to the tag office and get your tag and file for a title.

This is all assuming it is in fact a homemade trailer with no previous stampings or tags. If there are previous identifiers, I would get rid of them to avoid a much more tedious process or questioning.

Hope this helps.
