So, This weekend I get the distinct pleasure of swapping the timing belt, water pump & tensioner pulley on the wife's '08 Accord. Not really looking forward to it, but I was far less thrilled at $800+ in labor to pay someone to do it.

Anyway, seems fairly straight forward but it looks like the Crank Pulley can be a real bitch to break loose. Saw one method that looks good, but didn't know if anyone had tried it. Put your breaker bar and socket on the Crank pulley bolt and rest the breaker on the control arm. Disconnect the spark plug wires and crank the engine just long enough to break the bolt loose.

Anyone here tried this method?

I know lots of people who have done that, but it's pretty ghetto. You just bump the starter briefly. If something slips you can tear some stuff up in the engine bay pretty good.

You should buy the proper Honda crank pulley tool for it, I think you can get them locally but I'm not sure. They're pretty cheap on Amazon. They just hold the crank pulley in place with a breaker bar against the subframe or whatever, so you can use the socket and breaker bar to break the bolt free.

Ya, it's not as much the the tool as it is the amount of force it takes to break it loose. the tool is a rental at most parts stores, and you get that money back. However the time and force to break that bitch loose seems to be a royal PITA.

I have done it that way plenty of times! As said above, just bump it.... if you have a good impact gun it works well with the tool to hold the pully

Tool is essential. $25-30 for keeps. Lock it in the control arm and use a breaker bar on the bolt. Give it a good solid boot and it'll break loose. Only supposed to be 181 ft-lb. My 1/2" Mac gun breaks them loose a quarter of the time. 3/4" gun is really needed to do it with an impact. You might get lucky if it's been done before(probably had, being a 08.)

I use a 3/4 impact. On a side note I would replace the tension adjuster not the tensioner pulley. And we charge 700 parts labor and tax.

X whatever on the 3/4" impact has never let me down.

Tension Adjuster is part of the kit as well. I just didn't say it.

$700 for parts and labor is pretty damn good in comparison. Cheapest I found around here was $1100.

because we ALL have a 3/4" Impact right? :D

I just have a 1/2" impact.
Sounds like a good excuse to get one to me!

I think the dealer in rock hill only charges about $950. I charge $150 plus parts to do them at my house. It takes me about 1-1.5hrs but I do A LOT. Ive done 4 this week. Looks like you are about 2 hrs away...

I'm about to do this on the wife's 2011 honda pilot. I'm not really looking forward to it. I'm going to order the tool and all the parts in the next couple of months.

I ended up taking it to Triad Import Specialist in Kernersville. They had a great price and had it done in a matter of a few hours. It is was worth it to not spend my whole weekend at it. @snappy referred me to them. Great guys.

What was the bottom dollar? If you don't mind me asking. Not ruling out doing it my self but if it's reasonable I'd go that route.

I've had good results using a chain wrench to hold the balancer.
