how bad are the 2.5L's in a tj?

Mine does well for a trail mostly rig. That being said, I have no plans to replace it. It does really well on the trail, If geared. The 2.5 will not turn 4H on the trail with 35s and 4.10s. So I would advise gearing the crap out of it.

Not sure I would DD it.

I've got a 98 TJ with the 2.5l in it, it's my DD and my trail toy.

Running 4.88's it's still slow as hell but can comfortably cruise at 70-75 at around 3k RPM on the highway...

Mods include:
4.88 gearing, 4 inch short arm, 2 inch body, 33x12.5x15 pro comp MT/X, glasspack, 8000lb winch, hurst shifter..

It handles really well and last weekend I easily cleared some spots a 4.0l with a similar setup got stuck in, they're really light and you often get more lift out of your kit with the reduced weight... As far as MPG go, you know what they say Just Empty Every Pocket. With the proper setup it's a force to be reckoned with on the trail, lots of people underestimate it. Any further questions feel free to email me at TurciUSMC@aol.com i've got lots of videos and pictures out on the trails (none of URE)
