ok i have a 44s out of a 85 cvy k5 half ton and was just wondering how big of a tire i should go with and if i put a full float kit on it would it help

I ran 35" boggers on a 44 rear for years, never broke it. I now run 42" Iroks on a front 44. I have broken it, and the rear 9". But it took some bouncing and binding.

On what vehicle? A suburban? A geo? Probably not much bigger than 35s or 36s, especially if its a c-clip dana 44 (versus a bearing retainer style 44). Make sure it's not a gov-lock 10 bolt... get it out of there before you go fourwheeling! If memory serves, an '85 K5 wouldn't have dana 44s, but rather 10 bolts. Same axle really, but the gov-lock is miserable - ask me how I know. The front should do just fine on 35s or 36s if you keep it open, and use the throttle within reason. The rear.... if it's open, it should do fine too, just wheel like you got some sense.

With or without a locker? Anything more than 35's you need chomoly shafts in the front. As for the rear get a 14 bolt semi float that is 6 lug and never think about it again before you put anything in the rear.
