I got a motor for my 95 xj back at xmas ans I just got it in and it not running right and I got talking to some ppl and I need the computer but I cant remember if its a 97 98 motor from a zj

You need the 95 computer unless you changed everything over to obd2. What all did you swap from your old motor?

Wouldn't even run at all if it had the wrong computer for the xj..

The motors are internally the same regardless what year it came out of (86-90,91-99,00-01).. I've got a 96,97, or 98 in my xj with a 93 computer.. I've put 91 motors into a 88 and renix.. If it is not running right, something is missing, or not proper..

the throttle pos sensor, coolant temp sensor, intake air temp sensor need to be changed over for the 95.. everything else should be the same if I rememeber right.

Make sure you hooked up all the grounds that the old engine had. ive had that issue in past on other type of vehicle.

Did you hear the engine run before you got it?

and it not running right

some elaborating on not running right would be helpful.. and what was wrong with the motor you pulled out? did it not run right as well? it could be fuel pump, fuel filter, injectors, air filter, plugs, plug wires, vehicle wiring, faulty sensor, any multitude of things.. the more details the better, because I believe most of us on here need to know whats the exact problem is to be able to point you in the right direction.

no pulled the oil pan and it looked good and no metal flakes in the oil its miss firing really bad I blew a rod bearing and a freeze plug in the old motor other than the plug and bearing the old motor ran really good I had to put my old intake on the new motor and the distuburter and fuel rail and injecters

Ignition timing is your problem.
Yes, the disturber (his words) housing fits one way.
But it is a tooth or so off.
Been there.

yes firing order is right the distburter only goes in one way

That doesn't matter. you could have the wires out of order from the distributor to the spark plugs.

Firing Order: 1-5-3-6-2-4
Cylinder number front to back 1-2-3-4-5-6

Put #1 at top dead center on the fire stroke. Check your rotor location and hook up your wires in the firing order.

this is the easiest thing to mix up. Been there done that myself.

Well.. easiest way to put the motor on TDC #1 is to use a hose from a compression gauge to get into the #1 cylinder and spin the motor and stop spinning it when it starts building pressure (put your finger over the hose end), move by hand to 0* and install distributor as detailed above. if that didnt do it, check the crankshaft position sensor (hopefully you removed it before remopving the old motor.. if you didnt there is a good chance its broken)
