How do I get this broken toyota axle out?

Standard 8" toyota axle. I blew up a driver's side birf so now I need to get the inner axle out to replace it, but the inner won't come out. I clamped it with some vice grips and tried to pry it out, but it didn't budge. I was thinking I should try to knock it out from the other end, but I don't know if I can go thru the locker with a pipe to do that. It has a lunchbox locker. Don't they have a cross pin that would prevent me from using a pipe/shaft to knock the axle out from the pass side? Any ideas?

Do you have it lined up? The birf has two flat sides that go past where the trunion bearings go.

drill & tap the end & use a slide hammer. Weld a nut on the end & use a slide hammer.

Use a slide hammer..

If it's the inner only, your housing is probably tweaked a bit. Had the same issue with mine before I replaced the housing. You should be able to go through from the other side. That's what I did but it has to be fairly small solid bar/rod.

Try having someone turn the drive shaft back and forth while you pull with the vice grips.

Yes, it is the inner only. The birf is shattered into about 20 pieces. I did try to rotate the dshaft while pulling on the axle, but to no avail. How would I go about checking to see if the housing is bent? It is trussed, but I guess that doesn't mean that it can't be bent.

I will certainly give the slide hammer a try! Good suggestion!

A slide hammer and a nut welded to the axle shaft is the only way to go. Anything else is wasting time.

Send me a pic so I can post it up for ya. This will probably be useful to others down the line.

I'll take a couple pics. I've got to go get a slide hammer.

is it broken off square? if it is you may be able to use a hammer and a large punch
to "bounce" it out. hit it right on the end hard and see if it don't move out a little.
if you can get it to move out a little you might be able to grab it with vice grips
and pull it out. otherwise the welded nut and slide hammer will do the trick.

In conclusion...

A 9/16" bolt fit the threads on my slide hammer, so I cut the last inch or so from the bolt and welded it to the end of the axle shaft. A couple quick hits with the slide hammer and it popped right out. Just for reference, I also included a picture of how I remove the cone washers (I think this questions comes up a lot). I also use anti-sieze on the washers for easier removal.

Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions!
