It's an 88 xj motor into a 97 tj....any ideas? Thanks!

how do I wire up an xj motor in a tj?

do you just have an 88 motor laying about? non-HO heads arent as flow-ey-ish as the HO heads.. BUT, not to discourage you...
you need the following off the '97 TJ:
that is all i believe if I remember correctly. swap parts and install motor. I have put '91+ motors in '90- bodies with RENIX harness but never went the other way around.. I'd imagine the same parts I changed to go back, you'd need to go forward. granted, mine were from XJ to XJ but XJ to TJ isn't all that much different, with the exception of the brackets and fan location and all that.. and I don't even know if the TJ has a mechanical fan or not. oh and leave the knock sensor in the block if its in a water port.. basically if its different on the TJ than what looks on the XJ motor, change it. double check even.

- intake
- exhaust
- distributor
- bracketry
- water pump
- alternator
- fan
- power steering if different
- oil pressure sender
- water temp sender

I already have it swapped in the tj. With the xj trans, t-case, exhaust, intake and wiring harness. Should I try to hook up the wires from the xj harness to the tj harness? Just mainly trying to figure out the wiring I guess...thanks

so you have no tj engine side harness? does the exhaust pipe bolt up? if its truly an 88 exhaust manifold, I don't think it will. a few pictures will help explain what you have going on..

I do have some of the tj engine harness but I have all of the xj harness. And the exhaust is also from the xj just modified to fit in the tj.

well, the trouble you got there is:
the whole of the xj harness, including inside? you'll need the inside harness too, since the renix(84-90) computers are inside the cab.. it is doable but you'd be better off to find the 91+ intake and TJ harness.. how incomplete is the TJ harness? I used to have a 91 intake, but I think its gone.. the injectors are the same, but the throttle body is different -- including the sensors.. the TJ uses the same as 91+ xj's AFAIK with the exception of the cab connector being wired different, but will plug together, just dont apply power.... if you were closer I'd help you out but i'm in the middle of a number of projects(none of which are soon to be finished).. fuel plumbing changed too in '91 on the XJs..
do you have the computer part of the TJ harness? or just lights+such?
