know what I have? I'm a newbie at all of this!
I bought a '78 chevy 4wd longbed-i checked the VIN-it was originally a 2wd 1/2 ton.
It has d60 front end/14 bolt rear.(i only know this because of reading in various mags(ORA and Peterson's).
i'm guessing it has a: 350 motor,th350 trans.(3 speed auto)
How do I know what the gearing is? does it have lockers/lsd?
What kind of transfer case do I have?
Do I need to find part#/serial #'s?
If anyone would help me out it would be appreciated.

#1 most likely it was a cab swap at some point and thats why you VIN doesnt match.

Have you verified VIN vs Title?
If not do that before you learn a potentially bad lesson.

#2 ARE YOU SURE YOU HAVE A D60?
Not doubting, but if so someone spent a bunch of money to not lift very much or run very big tires.
Did you see a check story in Peterson's or do you think you have a D60 because everyone in there has a 60?
If you look at the front diff cover and in the webbing below and right of the cover you should see one of 4 things.
Either 60 44 10b or nothing. If nothing look at the back (crawl under truck and look at the same spot but looking out the front) of the webbing and you will find one of the other 3

should be easy to tell if its a SBC or BBC just by size diff.
Any number of us could help you if you took a pic of the engine. But as to whether its a 305,327, or 350 you will need numbers for that. look on the rear of the block on the drivers side just below the head. you will need a mirror to read it with the motor in the truck.

Tranny is most likely a th350 but could be a th400 take a pic of the pan and we could answer that one for ya.

also this is a bad way for me to guess but looking at the pic I dont think you have a 14b rear.

couple things making me doubt that.
#1 the stance
#2 the no shadow of a hub sticking through the rim
#3 rims style (from what I can see)

GM CORPORATE 14-BOLT
The "small" GM 14-bolt has a 9 1/2-inch ring gear diameter. It was used in the rear of 1964-and-later GM pickups, and in the rear of 1984-91 3/4-ton Suburbans.

GM CORPORATE 14-BOLT
With a 10 1/2-inch-diameter ring gear, the biggest 14-bolt GM rearend looks much like a Dana 70, and is but a few thousandths of an inch shorter in ring gear diameter. This axle is commonly used with big engines and/or overly large tires. It was used under 1973-87 3/4-tons.

Unless you were standing on the rear bumper facing outeward and bending over when you took it.

BTW, totally right bout the small 14 SF I didnt even think of that. Altough I cant imagine anyone pulling a 12 or even 10b and putting in a small 14. Especially IF they went through the expense of a front 60

Yes you have a D60/14 bolt combo, your t-case looks like a 203 but not 100% on that one.

ditto

on the 60/14...weird.

thanks for the help-now that I know what kind of axles I have... how do I find out what gear ratio was installed? and if any type of lsd/locker is installed?
