I am being offered a trrade of a 1996 XJ that they say will need front outer U joints changed soon and muffler work...
How do you know when the front outer U joint needs replacing?

I had one seize up and the steering wheel wouldnt return to center after turning a corner, that was kind of scary the first few times.

His mechanic verified that it was the U joints...

new issue/question. He emailed me this...

The muffler makes some noise, but is not loud and if I was going to keep it, I would probably live with it the way it is. The speedometer stopped working about a month ago along with the odometer. I don't know what caused that, but when it stopped, the check engine light came on.

Is this as simple as a broken speedo cable or worse?
Ever heard of this?

Also...it is a NY vehicle so I know I need to inspect heavily for rust and corrosion

this is what he had said when I asked about rust...

I really don't know about the check engine light. It came on exactly at the same time that the speedo stopped working. There is a small rust spot (about the size of a dime) on the roof, and the rest is pretty clean. I threw a quick paint job on it about two years ago when I got it, because it had damage to the left rear quarter panel. I think I even have some poloraids of the process showing the damage and when i was repairing it to paint it. For a 12 year old Jeep, I think it is in pretty good shape. The pictures are on paper, so I wouldn't be able to email them, but they will show you that it had no rust before. What all is wrong with the F150? I wouldn't be using that much either, and was not really looking to make a trade....was just wanting to sell the Jeep. But I figure it would be nice to have a pickup around if I ever need one. Let me know if you are serious about it and we can set up a time to check it out. I have gotten about 30 emails and phone calls since I posted it yesterday, so I don't expect it to last very long. My number is 704-685-2850 if you want to give me a calll with any other questions.

30 emails and calls about it? what is he selling it for 500 bucks? if not i doubt it. sounds like he is just trying to "sell" the jeep. to make it seem like its a hot item so you'll take it off his hands. and the part about the re-painting himself and the other minor items that he seems to downplay. i'd just be careful because if your truck is in good shape and mechanically sound, it would suck to trade with him and then have to put a bunch of money into the jeep. use your common sense. i mean we dont know what the jeep looks like, miles, price etc etc

That is my worry...

$1400 is in the title...$2400 in the ad...so, pick your price...

I'm shying away.

There's an 87 4runner where the guy needs a bigger truck. I think I'm going to lobby for it...

NY vehicle aside...would a broken speedo cable trigger a check engine light in a 1996 Jeep Cherokee?

to answer your question about the check engine light, no i dont believe that can cause a check engine light to come on. however i could be wrong. but i have had two nonworking speedos in two different vehicles i have had in the past and the check engine light didnt come on either vehicles. could always get the check engine codes checked at advance auto.

So Advance Auto can tell me what it specifically is?
That would be good.

it wont tell you exactly what it is. it will just tell you codes so you can figure it out through the codes if you know what you are doing.

I'm going to break in a say, Ohio-NY same difference its above the mason dixie line. Anything above NC means more weather and more salt. I know this isn't the for sale section but I've got a bone stock 2000 sport I'd sale for 3500 and the to-do list doesn't grow every time you talk buisness. The guy seems to be jerking you around, lay down under the thing and inspect it well, a bunch of fresh spray bomb just hides what's underneath, I personal prefer vehicles that haven't been over detailed that way. Usually screws up threads and makes hardware hard to get wrenches on and makes wiring unidentifiable. Never judge any vehichle by its exterior finish much less a Jeep.

Andrew stay away from this one.. there are plenty of solid XJs floating around this neck of the woods that are in good shape.. I'll keep my eyes out for you down here. what is your price range?
