HOW FIND A TRUCK THAT HAS BEEN SOLD

Need some help, im looking for a truck that my uncle owned about 15 years ago. He is like a father to me and mentions often he wish he had it back. I would like to locate it and see if this truck could be bought. Problem is I would like to try this without him knowing, but i dont have a VIN #. Is there any other options? Last time i seen it was still in Wilkes County where I live, but this was 7 or 8 years ago. It is a 79 F250 4x4reg cab long bed.

The first step would be to see if you could get the VIN. Then you might be able to work backwards from there.
Could you get your aunt or anybody else in on it? E.g. somebody that might have access to any family records? even an old license plate number would help.
 
Do you have any old pics of the truck with the license plate visible? If so, you might be able to find out the VIN from the old license plate number.
