was wondering how long my stock shafts would last if i welded the front. hp44- 5.13 gears and 36" swampers. under a xj. locker in rear. would rather spend the money on chromo's than the locker.if i know i won't have issues

any opinons would be appreciated. thanks.

Spend the money on a locker then get the chromos when you can, you won't regret it. If you're talking stock shafts, welding the caps helps...but in that setup (spooled) you're running on borrowed time. I broke a joint and trashed all four ears in mine once in the back yard with that same setup you're talking about (granted I was doing a front dig to turn though).

I'd go with a Lock Right and modify your TC so you have 2-low. Makes for awesome turning on tight trails and keeps the strain off your front axles until you need 4 wheel drive.

I've been running stock shafts spooled and haven't broken one yet. I've got an easy right foot though.

I ran stock 44 shafts in my 48' willys for years on 36" tsl's with a Detroit locker. Twisted the splines a few times & broke a few. An XJ is much heavier, don't bounce it or beat on it to hard.

I broke 3 stock front dana44 stocks on saturday at the rockvember event. Ive got cromo's on the way. My opinion, get chromo's - keep an eye on ebay/pirate/nc4x4/etc for a used lockrite & toss a new spring kit in it and be done.

I agree with the locker instead of welding. It doesn't seem like much, but when turning on the trail in 4wd, you will be giving the u joints a work out. I'd go auto locker (lockrite, ect) and a 2wd low mod would be nice. Thats basically what i'm doing with my new setup. lockrite in front and twin sticked 300. Turning a locked front end will give you a workout on tight twisty trails.

I ran 36'' Iroks with hp dana 44 spooled with ctm's and yukon shafts (when yukon had a lifetime warrenty) and it was under a zj. I had a STAK 4x4 t-case also and broke numerouse shafts and had one hub break and take out a front spindle. I never broke a CTM. Just my experince. I am very hard on the gas when I drive and wheels tend to go air born when I "Bump it ".
