how much can this tow

On a question like that it is best to obtain that info from a tech. manual. You take someone's answer that doesn't know and you could be in big trouble one day while towing. Gotta think safety when towing. Just my .02

X2 Better question is what are you trying to tow with it? It will flat tow a sammi? but I do not think that is what you were going for. Letting us know what you would like to tow might make it easier. Gear, Trans, and brakes makes a big difference. Will the trailer have one brake or 2/3? More info is needed.
 
Towing weight is based on gross vehicle weight rating. Check the sticker inside the door jam, or on the door. It should give you somewhere to start.

I misread that completely. So now I will check to see if my 86 Burb has the manual in it. Good catch.
 
My '82 3/4 ton suburban is rated for 15k total. I would think a 1 ton dually would be rated higher than mine. It has the same drivetrain as you are looking at. SM465,350
It will tow well, but it will be slow in the hills.
 
As stated it will be slow up hills, all depending on what you tow with it. IF it's in good shape go for it, and keep an eye open for a 454 donor. Almost a bolt in swap, then you will have an awesome tow rig.
