How much end play......

should there be in the out put shaft in a Np231? My sons XJ has a drive line vibration that disappears when the rear DS is removed. I suspect the DS but also noticed the output shaft has quite a bit of end play. This is a 96 XJ, aw4, 4.0 with a hack-n-tap SYE hooked to a CV DS. Just curios if anyone had issues with the xfer case causing drive line vibes.

I haven't had any trouble with mine. I have a double CV at the t/c end of the d-shaft.

Is the d-shaft balanced? Pinion angle changed recently for any reason?

Just shimmed the rear axle to get the pinion angle correct but the vibe did not change. I guess I'll get the balance on the DS checked and go from there , the play on the output shaft just had me wondering if it was normal. I also question if the hack-n-tap set up could be the problem. Thanks for the info Rick. John
 
If it is lifted the driveline angle may be off. Also if the ujoint in the driveshaft is going out it will cause vibrations. To answer your question though I do not remember a lot of play in my NP231 shaft on my YJ the last time I worked on it.
