How much have you spent on your pet that is sick or injured?

I usually call those "Shop Cats" . The big male that you get or shows up and you don't really want a cat, but he earns his keeps by killing all the mice in the shop. Might be missing a chunk of ear, only have one eye, leaves for a week at a time trolling for ass...

Yeah, those are about the only cool cats to me. Pun intended. However, if they'd all stay kittens forever, I'd have a dozen of them because they're freaking hilarious.

Yeap. There was a ol barn tom on our land when we bought our house. I ran him off a few times, when he kept coming back I just let him stay. Havent seen a mouse or snake yet, so until I do he can stay. OH, and he doesnt get on my cars .

All I can say is we keep a $10k limit credit card locked away solely for the potential for an emergency vet hospital visit and/or ACL surgery.
Large breed dogs are very likely to tear an ACL when they get to playing hard. Bloat is also a concern. We take reasonable precautions against each, but you never know...
Our local 24/7 emergency vet is called REACH. They won't take your pet in until you have guaranteed payment up front. It's not cheap to take your pet there, but it can be necessary.
Jasper was bitten on the muzzle by a huge copperhead when he was about 3 months old. We rushed him there, paid $xxxx up front to cover likely treatment and luckily it all worked out. See pic below of his shaved leg where the IV was placed.

My 10-year-old boxer is at the vet now. He is peeing blood. I don't know what the dollar amount is that changes my mind but I don't want to find out today

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully something small that will be easy to take care of.

Had to take my sister's dog to the vet last Thursday night at about 11:30. He must have gotten bit by a snake or something. Left side of his snooter was all swole up and his neck too. They gave him some happy drugs, Benadryl, and some antibiotics. He's getting better and luckily that was only about a 300 dollar trip.

My previous dog stuck his snout in a yellow jacket nest. Same thing, swollen face and neck. I got stung dozens of time trying to get the damn bees off him. Same meds as yours got, and 4 days latter he was all good.

The thing a lot of people don’t know is that a lot of human meds work on dogs too. Just pay attention to the weight/dosing and go. Benedryl, aspirin, indigestion meds. Vet charges for “animal meds” when you can get the same damn thing at Walmart (or already have it at home) for half the cost and avoid the visit.

Bad breath, yes. Sluggish and lethargic, yes. He stays inside most of the time, but lately when he does go out, he goes off on his own like he doesn’t want you to know where he is. We have a large fenced-in yard that is wooded, so he can hide. I’ve heard that dogs go off when they are about to die, wonder if that is why he’s doing that.
.

What scares the hell out of me about what I quoted above is that she has been spending time "alone" more and more lately...going and sleeping under the desk, or over by the door away from my wife and I. She used to be attached to me, always under foot, and laying in my lap anywhere I was sitting. All I know is I don't know how I'm going to handle it when that day does arrive.

This is not a myth. My yellow lab who was 11 or so at the time displayed all these signs. One evening I put her on our deck, she acted like she was happier out there. I went to sleep, had the window open and started hearing something that turned out to be her trying to chew her way through the pickets on the wooden gate. This dog never chewed anything, it freaked me out. I let her off the deck and she headed towards the woods, I put her in the lot with our goats so she wouldn't run off (this dog had never run off). She walked to the far corner of the lot and laid down. I walked over and laid down beside her. 30 minutes later and after a long conversation with her, she did a long exhale and that was it. I couldn't have asked for a better way for her to go.
As far as spending money on a dog it all depends on the situation and the age of the dog, just like it would for my own life.
