My factory steering box on my 02 frontier has worn out. I pulled one off an xterra today and plan to change it out tomorrow. Can somebody explain the correct way to fill and bleed the power steering fluid? Im guessing the principle is the same as brakes, but without a pedal to hold the pressure Im not sure how to do it without letting more air in. Thanks!

Fill the reservoir and then turn the steering lock to lock. Check your fluid level and add more if need be. This normally bleeds all of the air. However, if it seems like you still have air then with the engine running, slowly loosen the nut on the pressure side until it starts to leak. Tighten it back up and then turn steering lock to lock.

When I would change power steering fluid... add some.. start motor.. add some more..then slow start turning the steering wheel lock to lock, do that several times... check level done.

Now this was on a GM car... so it might be different.. I wouldnt think so.. tho.

It could whine or you would feel rough spots/bumps while turning lock to lock. The air goes back into the reservoir and seeps upwards towards the cap. You don't need to leave the cap off.
