Well, it looks like I will be selling or trading in my father's tractor in the not too distant future.

The tractor is a 55hp, 4wd, cab, hydrostatic Mahindra with a FEL. It is more tractor than I need to maintain the property for the time being, and as I already have a similar Kubota, I am thinking about selling it and getting a 2wd or pocketing some cash and buying a smaller tractor.

With all of its options, it should still have decent marked value, is it best to trade-in at a dealer (maybe partial trade plus cash), or sell private?

Do you use internet prices as a guide or is there something like kbb that a dealer might use?

I got two dollars....and a serious interest in what you figure out.

Has anyone ever traded a tractor in to a dealer?

This tractor is a 4 hour round trip from me, I am not looking forward to the logistics of showing the tractor to all the time wasters that come out of the wood work sometimes.

Model, age, condition and attachments that come with it make a YUGE difference in pricing.
Yeah, I would keep the implements, that aren't tractor specific..... although, I guess I should make sure my 30hp Kubota can pull or power what is there.

To start with, take a look at FB/CL and see what similar tractors are currently listed for. Since there are so many different models, you probably wont find many direct comparisons, so get a feel for similarly sized and equipped machines, and then gauge how Mahindras are priced relative to Deere/Kubota/Yanmar/Kioti/etc. That should help you get a +/-10% ballpark ad price. Then factor in the condition of yours to find a listing price. From there, you gotta weigh the value of getting the most money (list high, be patient, wait for the right buyer), vs selling quickly in 1 shot (list low, don't negotiate, make it a good enough price that the buyer doesn't want to risk missing out). I usually start high, end up dropping the price to the mid range, and then take less and end up at the bottom number anyway   But every once in a while, you find that guy who wants exactly what you have and doesn't like negotiating.

In your case, considering the inconvenient proximity, I'd list for about 5-10% below the estimated market value and get it done.

If you want a semi independent estimate on price, post up the full specs and some pics, and us vultures on here will be happy to shoot low and hope to snag a deal ;)

Also, I don't have any direct experience with dealer trade in, but considering they want to make money on it, the only way they can do that is buy it for less than market value. And if you're not buying a replacement for the trade in, they don't have a secondary way to make money, so that has to hamper your trade in value also. But its a guaranteed sale, so there's a value to that.

The dealer trade would probably be driven by the opportunity to grab a smaller tractor off their lot and put some cash in my pocket. Plus, a dealer would deliver the new and take away the old one in one shot. BUT that is a lot of things that need to workout, and that is not how my life is going this year!

I will post up some details later this week if/when I manage to get out to where the tractor is parked.

Year, hours, cab or ROP, model and condition will drive price.

With mahindra specifically the age makes a huge difference

Why age? Early model issues? Long term wear and tear? Or are some years just sour apples?

I can’t quote the particulars but certain years mahindra as aren’t well supported parts wise. And by well supported I mean ..basic things like a water pump aren’t available at all.
