Ok, so a friend of mine at work sent me some info on a 86 grand wagoneer that his dad was looking to sell. I went and looked at it and decided I couldnt let it get scrapped. So I gave him a deposit on it pending he had to find the title. I later learned that it was his friends vehicle that had died recently and he and the friends brother were getting rid of some of his stuff. Well, they have no clue where he put the title for it. Can anyone advise on how to go about getting a title? Really would like to get the waggy back on the road, but cant even haul it for scrap without a title.

You can haul it for scrap without the title based on the age of the vehicle. My step-daughter's worthless ex boyfriend hauled her 1996 Explorer for scrap and kept the money for himself all while she slept on the couch. No title and it wasn't in his name at all.

But to answer your question about getting a title, you may want to take the VIN number to the DMV and ask them. May have to go through the bonding process, which may end up costing more then the vehicle is worth, but it's nice to keep old iron on the road.

Thanks for the reply. I was under the impression that you can't scrap without title, but if you can I may tell him I'll take for a chunk less, snatch the axles and maybe motor and go from there.

I will buy it minus axles and motor if you want to go that route

If I do I'll let you know. I really want to save this ol thing and drive it. I've wanted a waggy for several years.

I hope you can save it. I bought a 79 cherokee chief a while back to dd and I love it(as long as gas stays cheap). It has had some terrible hack job work done it and i would love to find a whole parts vehicle to try and fix some of the dumb.

The executor of the estate, having power of attorney for the deceased, can apply for a duplicate title, and then you can go from there.

This or a bonded title are likely the only way.

or you get a notarized bill of sale from person for the jeep, get a surety bond from insurance company, take the bill of sale and jeep and proof of surety bond to DMV inspector for an inspection. he will inspect, verify vin on bill of sale matches vin on vehicle, as well as it not being reported stolen or having a lien. If not, then he will issue form LT-270 (inspectors report) then you take that and your other paperwork to the dmv tag office and you will get it registered. Some people call this getting a bonded title
