I need to move 30 trucks from MI and PA down to Winston-Salem NC. How do you go about getting dealer tags? Any other info about dealer tags would be helpfull. Thanks

It's harder than it used to be -- they are cracking down on "part-time" dealers. Plus you gotta have business liability insurance, etc.

DMV has a "transfer" tag available to individuals -- I think that's what it's called. I've gotten a couple in the past, cost about 10 bucks each.

edit: just re-read that it's 30 trucks.... maybe you'll need to be a dealer, then. IIRC, if you sell more than 5 per year, you have to be a dealer.

IF you have a dealer friend, you could become a salesman. Then you would only need your pocket card and would be able to move them legally, with their tag(s). But everyone driving would have to do the same

I called the NCDOT and they faxed me the info to get dealer tags. It's alot of info but I think I can get them. There are alot requirements you have to meet now. We buy atleast 10-15 semi trucks per year and sell them to owner operators in our company.

Dang, we just sold eight 1999 W900's, although they were spec'ed for heavy haul. I believe we got $27,000 each through a trade in deal for our new Mack's. We went with the trade to avoid the capital gains hit.

Back on subject, wouldn't it be easier to get transport or temporary tags?

that would allow him to get them here...but what about selling them to the owner/operators...

I think that's where the max per year comes in...in the title transfers...
