How to get rid of a stump?

I had to take a tree down right beside my driveway and now I am looking for how to best get rid of the stump.

I have cut the stump down as low as possible, and other than blowing it up, digging it up, or paying a professional to grind it up, what else can I do to get it gone as fast as possible. I am trying to speed up the natural decaying process.

I have already scored it several ways with my chainsaw, and I have also drilled multiple 1" holes in it so whats next?

This was a pine tree and it is about 18" in diameter if it matters.

I've been wondering the same thing. I know there are Stump Rot chemicals you can pour down drilled holes. not sure how fast they are though. I'd like to hear experience on this one.

Maybe light it on fire. My neighbor burnt one out a few days ago..12-14" diameter it smoldered for 2-3 days and was gone. Then fill hole with dirt.

I have been told that you can pour syrup on the stump and the ants will eat it,never tried it so I cant say for sure, but Im sure it wont be very quick if it does work.

I cut down about 60-70 pine trees at my old house. If you can dig a hole on both sides of the stump, and wrap a snatch strap around it, you can pull it up with a truck. You'll probably want to cut a few of the biggest roots though. I pulled up a few with my Dodge and Tahoe, but paid my neighbor to come over with his loader and remove the vast majority of them. I had to back up and really jerk them to free a few of them. 18" though is pretty big. I'm not sure I pulled out any that large. A stump grinder is really the best way, especially if you plan on planting something else in that spot. A good stump grinder will grind it down deep and chase the largest roots out several feet from the base. I've also dug out the dirt all the way around a few stumps before, then cut it slightly below ground level and covered it with a thin layer of dirt. The ones I did like that were on the edge of the woods where I wasn't going to plant grass or another tree/bush, so it didn't matter. I just didn't want to look at them.

Why go through all that hassle??? Stump grinders rent for less than $100 for a half day and are easy!

You guys are too cheap. No way I'd dig holes and yank it out if I could just grind it for less than $100 and an hour of my time and be done with it. Why burn it? It never really works 100% and only really works if the tree is dead. A green stump won't burn and if it does, takes forever

I would think a green Pine stump would burn up if you built a hot fire above it, dry Dogwood or Hickory and or maybe use the kerosene rodknocker mentioned. It might take a day or so but once burning well the sap should fuel the fire. A fire might crack or blacken your drivway if it's too close though

Going to have half a day in the job at a minimum by the time you drive to the rental store twice. Plus pulling it up with a truck is fun!

Call Al Sharpton and tell him that you have dirt on George Zimmerman under there. He'll come dig it up for you!

I had a good time with mine, I dug a small hole on the side of it, sat a bag of charcoal in the hole and made a stove. The stove ended up being a pit and eventually was the neighborhood hang out. Everyone called it The Volcano. I burned all my leaves, tree limbs and some trash in that thing.

Only thing about burning the stump is that you don't get the big roots.

Others that I wanted gone, I had someone come and grind it up. By the time you rent a grinder and the time getting it back, it's just as cheap to have someone do it for you.

got this one fellas, If the Al Sharpton thing does'nt pan out, clean out around it cut it off as low as possible and pile charcoal on it and fire it up, it will burn down the root paths slow and i also tossed a few briquets in there the next day to keep it going/speed it up, then just filled in the hole with dirt after a few days, it was still smoldering when i packed the hole full

^^^^ Bigclay said 18" dia. not a 18" tall Pine tree................ I personally would'nt want to burn it in this weather, but on a cold winter day I'd burn that thing quick.

I would like to burn it, or at least have fun trying to burn it, but it is right on the driveway, and right next to my wood fence.

Someone at work said Epsom salts poured in the holes would speed up the process, never heard that one before.

I saw an XJ for sell here in the forums that could probably pull that stump out in idle. Apparently, it has a doubler and everything... Maybe he would let you rent it.
BWAHAHAHA

Salt will do it. My mom poured a bag of driveway salt that had gotten wet into the bushes next to her garage. In 6 months the bushes were gone. The down side is nothing ever grew there again. She ended up planting fake flowers there.
