How to quit my job

Well I let him know what my plans were, it went well. Although he was already kind of aware since he seen my name pop up on the new list of Installers/inspectors. But he wishes me the best and even told me that I could call him if I was slow and work for him to keep afloat. And hopes to work together on projects that are to big for me or him to handle by ourselves.

And that is why you don’t burn bridges. There will be a time that you need each other in the future. I’m glad it seems like it will work out well.

Same around here. I was doing market research and out of 12 company’s I called, only 4 answered the phone and of those 4 2 were an answering service and I never got a call back from the actual company. And none of the 8 that didn’t answer I left messages and none called me back. So I imagine as long as I can get my name out and make the phone ring, I’ll be alright.

That's been my experience with a lot of trades in my area. They don't bother to communicate because (I assume) they are busy and don't think they need the business, but that's also the worst way to grow your business. If you don't pick up the phone or call back, I just spent my money at your competition. Well, if the competition called back and didn't do the same thing.

I think that is about the best outcome you could hope for.

It sounds like you have respect for your former boss, and this proves it was well deserved respect. Good luck on your new business venture, and I would imagine knowing you always have a way to make ends meet if your business slows down for whatever reason must make the change a little less daunting.

I've experienced the same thing at times. Call, leave messages, no reply. I recently read an article that there is a shortage of tradesmen in the home building field, and so consequently houses are taking 60-90 days longer to complete.

In construction period. Everyone of our subs are backed up and turning work down and trying to hire people but
No one wants to start at the bottom
And learn a trade today. Everyone is looking short term, why bust my ass for 10 per hour and learn a trade when I can work at Walmart or fast food for the same pay. What they don’t see is the money they could be making in 5-10 years when they will still be making 10 an hour at fast food.

Same problem in the steel business. Noone wants to learn. We have a hard time getting quality shop guys and good erectors. Its hard work, but it pays off in a few years.

Is $10/hr the going rate for someone starting out in the construction business now? I was making $10/hr helping out my friend's dad during spring break, Christmas break, and summer breaks 20-25 years ago.

I've read several articles about employers saying that they can't find employees. PAY UP, and they will SHOW UP!

The company I work for has basically doubled in sales the last three years every year. And we are on track to more than double what we did last year but we are done we can’t get any bigger because all of our subs are Maxed out and our own crews are maxed out and we can’t find anyone to hire and neither can our subs, it’s a weird place to be.

In the last 5 years the company im with has invested ~$200 k in 3d BIM modeling (what I do) and a 3d laser scanning system. As well as buying an entire street to expand our shop. This year weve put together 3 full time field crews. But we cant seem to find good fitters. Nobody wants to work at learning misc steel.

If you have 0 skills yes. But if you can read a tape and use a level I see 15 as a average starting spot.
Skilled labors 20-30 depending on what they can do.
But we are also in a smaller market compared to bigger city’s. We are also one of the few construction companies that pays benefits for all employees, not just foreman up. But yes paying more would get more people to work but I’ve seen people I graduated with take a pretty good size pay cut to not have to work hard. Young people are lazy and have no work ethic. The position I’m in 85% of the people in it are 55+ so 10-15 years there will be a huge need, I’m buying my time because the higher positions will be there.

THIS RIGHT HERE!! I can not tell you how many times I have read: Must have x,y,z experience, must have tools, must have blah, blah, blah......well screw me if most folks was that prepared why would they work for you and your 10-15 dollar an hour rate? Hire at the expected output or knowledge, pay based accordingly. If those parameters are not met fire and move on. I can bet your hind end you'll find a better fit quicker with less turn over. It's not rocket science.

Yep I’ve had several people I know come and apply and turn the job down due to pay where I work, but my boss is to cheap to pay field guys what they are worth. I work in the office and make out pretty good, I know I’m making less than some of the guys I went to school with, but I’m also working 10-20 hrs less a week and my boss is extremely flexible when I need to go do something during the day. To me that’s worth making a little less for the time being.

Thats the perks of an office job. I started as a fitter in the shop and trained at all the positions, then settled into 3d modeling.

Yep and those kind of Adds are what deters me experienced folk from seeking out employment, let alone those wanting to enter a job market. It might as well be read , no experience don't apply. It seems outside looking in that no realistic entry point exist anymore. I really, really want to be in the field, but my knowledge and skills are not "lets start over and prove my abilities category". I have either grown to stubborn or callous at 42 to play that game with people my own age or older.
Education however sees this value.....its just not monetarily as rewarding.

Idk what it cost to dispose of my poo, but it’s gotta be profitable.

If it's like septic companies around here, zero. Find an out of the way city street, open a manhole, and dump away. We are in a dead end neighborhood just off US 1, and see a truck dumping every month or two. Supposed to go out to the buffalo plant....they save a few bucks of Diesel, too.

HUGE fines....got a grudge with any of them? Not something I would just up and do since poo runs down hill but the right person is going to make their business, financial, and life in general much, much more crappy!

I was kind of hoping you gave him one of these on the way out, but it sounds like you did the right thing.

I pay $15 for a basic skilled tech, I supply the tools, train them on Mercedes Benz and everything else...my help sucks and it doesn't seem to matter how much I pay or how much I "work with" their always F-uped, can't work a full week schedule. Employees for the most part suck ass in the any type trade business ,because the ones who are really good go do their own thing.

Dumping in manholes unauthorized is illegal. We have to get special permission when we clean the Pepsi plants lift station in Winston. But it’s still funny because you can see us from Bus40 backed up to a manhole and the lady at the city says people call in non stop when they see us doing it

He respects you as a fellow tradesman. That's the unity that has to kept at all times. You did it right.
He even went as far as to tell me I could stay on as long as I want and to tell me if for what ever reason it doesn’t work out I’ll have a place to come back to, although he hopes i am more successful than him. Overall it went a lot better than I anticipated.
