just wondering what it takes to remove a gas tank froma 98 xj i heard it was like a 30 min job. something like unbloting the straps and disconnecting the two hoses going into and out of the tank then its out. am i right or is there more im not seeing

Don't know about the jeep itself, but from other vehicles, it sounds about right except you also have the unplug to fuel pump.
Only other suggestion is that if it is an option, empty the tank as much as possible prior to beginning.Basically, it is easier if you do not have about 150 lbs of fuel in it.
Removing is easy, reinstalling is a little more challenging but still not hard. I have done it off the ground with a jack and a board by myself and my mechanical abilities are limited.

Yup, it's pretty easy on an XJ, Just siphon as much fuel out, buzz the straps loose, unto the evap hose, the fuel hose, and the sender harness, remove the straps, remove the tank.
