I just got a samurai and the po said it had a 1.6 8v in it but I am not sure. The only markings I can see atm are s 26 in the front drivers side of the block and 1281 on the drivers rear near the bellhousing, there are more numbers before that but that is all i can see atm since it is dark outside.

I have looked and if it was a 1.3 it should have either 1298 or 1334 stamped near the rear.

Any help?

The stamp near the bellhousing is the displacement. You've been had. The 1.6l block is also a little taller and requires an adapter kit to mount to the motor mounts and transmission. It may have a 1.6l head. Does it have a mechanical fuel pump on the passenger side of the head near the firewall?

Yep fuel pump on the rear pass side. I bought it thinking it was a 1.3 so it isn't too bad. It is fairly decent overall. It has a Webber, 5 New 31x9.50 tsl swamper radials, warn Winch, dual batteries, hard top, gm alternator, springs are super stiff though.

Po also claimed tcase gears and Detroit style lockers front and rear. I believe the tcase gears as 1st 4lo is stupid low.

It could have a 1.3 head on a 1.6 block, still check the numbers on the drivers side block near bellhousing to tell what the block is. Supposedly a 1.6 block with 1.3 head bumps the compression up.

You should have a distinct displacement stamp on the bellhousing, numbers about 1/2" tall. Do you see obvious adapter pieces on the motor mounts and between the engine and bellhousing?

There is clearly an adapter plate and with the block numbers it looks like it is a 97 1.6 block with what I assume is a 1.3 head. It has a plastic timing cover as well.

Here are some pics of the engine bay.

If you wanna have real fun, get rid of the stock airbox and and run a regular round paper air filter.
The Weber needs a lot more air than what it's getting.
The difference will be very noticable.
