Ok I have a 96 zj with a 4.0.. How do I know what axles are in it? Also what gear oil should I use? Should I use an additive? I know for sure it has a locrite locker in the front but not positive on the rear. Thanks in advance.

A good parts store will know what you need. 80-90 in both with a slip additive in the rear is always good. Depending on modifications you might need to change.

I run 75-140 synthetic in mine with limited slip additive in the rear I have a lock rite in the front also.

so a loc rite locker doesnt require any additive? Hope you guys have better parts places in your area than I do around here. There all idiots here. LOL.. Ima Jeep NEWB but I know about other cars and mainly Mustangs and they will give you the wrong part and steer you wrong in a sec..

I have a aussie locker and the instructions says to not use a additive. Loc rites are probly the same.

I'm 99% sure that all the ZJ 4.0's came with dana 30 front, dana 35 rear. What transfer case do you have? If its the 242, then bump it up that last 1% ;)

If the rear is a D44, it's junk. They put aluminum D44s in ZJs.

Its an aluminum center section, and while you may think its "junk" many people that wheel their ZJ/WJ would disagree. Compared to the D35 rear that the OP has, it would definitely be an upgrade for strength. There are a lot of people running D44a's locked on 35's. Of course, adding a truss is a recommended if you're going that route.

Failry confident you have a D35 in the back and a D30 in the front. As far as the T-case, if you have 2wd, 4wd part-time, N, 4Lo then you have the 231; if you have the fulltim option in addition to those, then you have the 242.

If for some reason you have the rear D44a, then there are plenty of opinions on whether it is a good axle or not. The majority of people will say that the rear D35 is the weakest axle by far.

I have not opened the rears up yet... HOwever Im 100% positive it has lockers in the front.. IM not sure what tcase I have but it does have part time fulltime N and 4low...

Yes Im in Cherryville near Belmont..

That would be the NV 242.
