how to tell what trans I have

got a 94 burban with a 454 auto 4x4 what trans is in it

Everywhere that i have read says it is probably a 4l80e.

ok thanks thats what I thought too but got a shift solinoid for it today and it was the wrong part just making sure that I had the right trans

It should be a 4l80. 4l80e came out with the OBDII.

^ that's what I was thinking. It SHOULD have a Throttle Valve cable, which distinguishes it from the 4L80"E".

He said it was a 94. OBD 2 started in 96, yet I have seen a few 97's with OBD1. It could be either a 4l80e or 700r4. Same transmission, just 4l80 is 5 speed. Should be numbers on the tailshaft.

a 700 isn't the same as a 4l80.
count the pan bolts, a 700 or 4l60e (94 is a split year on the trans) has 16 pan bolts
a 4l80e has 17 pan bolts

I believe you're right. 4l80 is 400 correct?

yes the 4l80 is a 400 with overdrive and electronic controls instead of vacuum.
