How would you build it?

LJs come with 3.73 so no need for a front carrier. You can get thick gears for the rear 44, so again no carrier needed there. That $1k budget for a regear is pretty darn close without adding any traction devices.
Not splitting hairs with ya.
He said LSD in the front.

Just kidding, Jody sounds like he has the best plan.

So far, your idea sounds like what I was going for. What would you recommend for a steering upgrade? And as far as the suspension, I had looked into the Zone combo lift to start with. Either that or the 2.5 RC and Metalcloak Overlines.

There's a few out there like the V8 ZJ tie rod or a custom 1/4" wall tie rod using 3/4 ton TREs. Either one will be under $150 all said and done.

I spent about 250 for complete rebuild kits including gears per axle. (not including gearing shop fee) truetrac for the 60 was 600 (much cheaper for 30 and 44). That 1000 budget does seem spot on. I believe LSD for the 30 would cost about 470, hardly more than a quality lunch box. So for 1500 for regear and front LSD? That sound about right? Then you could squeeze in the other things you mentioned?

Id be a fan of deferring the winch and letting that be a small mod you save up for and do after a few trails. Especially after you find if you plan to be trail addicted and needing a winch for small party excursions or if your normal groups and their winches will be sufficient?

i think the metalcloaks look awesome. but im told time and time again by 'the gurus' that they are overpriced. way overpriced.

Tons and an Atlas. Anything less is half stepping.

haha. my original plan was j10 44s front and rear. 33s. until i talked to people like you who convinced tons, 37s, v8 swap, etc. hahaha. the wife constantly says how my quick 3 month build turned into this 3 year fiasco. hahaahah

but im super stoked about it now. cant wait to finish! eager to see the build thread for this guy

I agree, but compared to the other 100% bolt ons out there, they're
about the same. I could just go flat fender for less than $300

Only advice I'll give is...If you plan on keeping the vehicle for years of enjoyment do your research and plan out what you want the end product to be and don't be a cheap ass. I.e. If you want to run 35's do it right, good quality lift, do the gearing with whatever you decide for lockers all at the same time to save labor and $$$. Plenty of manufacturers out there for good parts and prices all over the board so research all options. Body armor is your friend when it comes to saving your body and your undercarriage so invest wisely. Good luck and keep us posted on the path you take.

I disagree. I think a winch is as useful off the trails as it is on. I would buy a winch before lockers or some other upgrades. A winch can get you over an obstacle that lockers may not.

Even if that means buying a cheaper winch and upgrading later.

Heres where I would start:
- 4.88s
- winch/mount
- flat belly or underbody armor
- upgraded steering
- BB or other lift/flat fenders as budget allows with appropriate tire size

No need to add traction that gets you deeper in the more difficult trails and not be able to self extract yourself.
Winch is a top priority IMO as well

Makes sense :) did not think of a winch in that way. Being a fan of the buddy system and having farm blood (cable and block) I've trained myself to think without one. I stand corrected
