HP tuners vs local tuner

Looking at getting my Ls swap factory ecu tuned to get better gas mileage/ run better at super low rpm. It’s a startup tune with all the emissions and security crap already removed and runs pretty good as is, but it was intentionally retarded and fuel added for safety as a startup tune.

There’s a local guy that Marty79 uses that has quoted $600 for a street tune (no dyno used) and ho tuners with 2 credits is about $500.

1) Question for anyone with first hand knowledge of hp tuners is will 2 credits be enough get a good tune from a decent one? I would have a unit to sell or use again with hp tuners

2) does anyone have an hp tuners unit I could rent or borrow (would buy you a credit or 2 in exchange for use)

3) is the process of using hp tuners pretty easy or would I save a lot of hassle just going to the tuner

Remote tuning was decent for me with HP. I had an underlying sensor issue that made mine painful. I went ahead and bought HP because I have another truck that is ls swapped. Idk if it's worth it or not if you aren't going to play around and learn some stuff yourself.

I used Michigan Motorsports and it was around $300 for the tune. It was reworked multiple times and I still feel like it needs some help.

I think I would use these guys if I were to do it again.

You can use mine if you would like.

Oh, and if you have a wide band o2, it will help them tune a lot.

A good local guy will always be better. Key word good. A idiot with hp tuners can make it worse. Just seeing what you’re wanting to do, I’d buy the tuner and try some forum reading. Lots of good adjustments for stock form. Plus there’s a lot of things you can do with hp as far as bi directional on many makes of cars. Works as a damn good scanner on many cars. And if a man wanted he can do deletes and stuff. But I heard that’s illegal lol 😂

Another plug for using a local guy. I used J Speed Tuning with my buggy. He’s done every buggy that came out of Cutlers Shop for the last several years. Highly recommend him!! His rate included dyno time. Pulls until it was right. Not to mention a really fun day watching your shit play the songs of our people!!

I’ve never looked into what is involved in tuning. Looks like you can get a tuner for $400 plus $50/credit. Older OBD2 are typically 2 credits and more modern or performance are 4 credits and transmission tuning is additional. But bought once per VIN for life.

So, for $500-600 you could have control of your pre 2015 engine and trans tuning. Then you just need the knowledge. Thats pretty cool considering $300-$500+ for a one time from someone else.

You could do your own dod disable and pull the lock up out of your trans (1-4) and save it. All for the 100$ in credits. And magically remove those pesky catalyst codes 😜
